Katie Thurston, known for her time on ‘The Bachelorette,’ is facing a tough health journey. At just 34, she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, an aggressive form of breast cancer. After several tests and scans, Katie learned that her cancer had spread to her liver, making it stage 4. This news came only 43 days after her initial diagnosis and just days after her wedding. Katie now faces medical menopause and the risk of lymphedema as part of her treatment. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful and confident in her care team.

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Katie shared her latest health update. She explained, “That does put me at stage four,” after a PET scan found small but suspicious spots on her liver. Katie said, “I know stage four can sound very scary, and it can be. However I feel very optimistic on my outcome. I’m very confident in the team at Columbia and I just wanted to share that update.” She also revealed her new treatment plan would include chemotherapy and that she had to start medical menopause, which is common for young women with breast cancer.

What Is Medical Menopause and Lymphedema?

Medical menopause happens when cancer treatments stop the ovaries from making hormones. This can cause symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and bone loss, similar to natural menopause but often more sudden and intense. Katie started this process to help slow her cancer’s growth.

Lymphedema is another risk for breast cancer patients. It’s swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid, often after surgery or radiation that affects the lymph nodes. According to Dr Ravi Shankerji Kesari, General Physician, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bengaluru, Lymphedema is a chronic medical condition characterised by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues. It leads to swelling, usually in the arms or legs but can occur in other parts of the body as well. 

Symptoms include swelling, heaviness, tightness, and discomfort in the arm or chest. Lymphedema can develop months or years after treatment and may last a lifetime if not managed early. The treatments of the same include special exercises, skincare, and wearing compression sleeves to reduce swelling.

Katie’s Attitude and Message of Hope

Katie is facing her diagnosis with courage and honesty. She admits that stage 4 cancer is frightening but chooses to focus on hope. She said, “Nevertheless, since I am triple positive and the liver spots are small and were identified early, I am feeling quite hopeful about the outcome”. Triple-positive breast cancer, her type, is known to respond well to certain treatments, giving her more reason to stay positive. She has also been open about the emotional side of her journey. She talks about the stress of managing insurance, fertility, and mental health appointments all at once.
