We always come across several women and even men who feel getting pregnant while on the period is scientifically not possible. But, this stands false. Though the chances would be remarkably less, it is very much likely for women to get pregnant on their period. This means, no more taking it easy on the protection part during those days of the month. Even though it is said that having physical contact during periods can be avoided for hygiene basis, but there are no specific guidelines or rules, which state that one cannot do so.
This leads to various couples taking it easy on the protection part, thinking that conceiving during this time is highly impossible. Dr Deepa Dewan, Associate Director & Unit of Head, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Max hospital, Gurgaon explains, “Menstruation is regular vaginal bleeding that is a part of a women's monthly cycle. Every month, it an every-month process for the uterus to prepare for pregnancy. If no pregnancy, the uterus starts to shed a lining in the form of blood. The blood that we see is little blood and some tissue linings from the inner wall of the uterus.”
Why Do Periods Happen?
Yes, this is a question that we often ask to ourselves when we are experiencing those horrible mood swings that time of the month. Or, when we are not able to wear certain clothes when we have to go out only because the comfort will be missing. But why do women menstruate? On this, Dr Dewan explains, “A woman menstruates from menarche to menopause. From age 10 to 13 years of life to 45 to 55 years age. Menses start when the female hormones FSH and LH are produced cyclically. They act on the ovary to produce estrogen, leading to egg release from the ovary on day 14 to 16 of cycle and progesterone production in the second half of the cycle. The microbes also play a major role in the reproductive health.”
Can Women Get Pregnant On Their Period?
A golden question that we have all wanted to know about! But, is it possible that whatever the ladies believed in until now could stand false? Is it possible for women to conceive while on their period? Dr Dewan clarifies, “Pregnancy takes place at the time of ovulation, which is on day 14 to 16th of the cycle. If there is no fertilisation of the egg, then, menstrual bleeding occurs after 14 days after egg formation. So, the chances of pregnancy are maximum after 14 days of start of menses.”
Saying no to surest chances of not getting pregnant while on their period, Dr Dewan busts the bubble that chances of getting pregnant during menstruation are almost negligible, but it is certainly possible. Further, there are no side effects of menses on pregnancy because it’s a normal physiological process.
