India is going through a substantial increase in the cases of seasonal flu, and the national capital, Delhi, tops the list. As per the latest government figures, more than 20,000 people have been infected with the influenza A (H1N1) virus, popularly referred to as swine flu, and at least 347 deaths have been reported until December 2024.
The outbreak of seasonal flu has impacted several states, with Delhi topping the list at 3,141 cases. Kerala too witnessed a steep rise, reporting 2,846 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 2,027 cases. Tamil Nadu (1,777 cases), Gujarat (1,711 cases), and Rajasthan (1,149 cases) also have reported considerable increases.
For the unversed, the H1N1 virus, which infects humans, birds, and pigs, is transmitted mainly through respiratory droplets when a person with the infection coughs, sneezes or speaks. As infections increase, it is important to implement preventive measures to remain safe and prevent the spread of the virus.

1. Vaccination
One of the most effective means to guard yourself against the virus is annual flu vaccination. The vaccine not only assists in building your immunity but also lessens the severity of the symptoms in case you contract the virus.
2. Practise Good Hygiene
Good hygiene never goes out of style. Wash your hands often with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand rubs. Dr Srivastav noted to not touch your face often, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth since the virus can penetrate through these routes.
3. Wear a Mask in Crowded Areas
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, we all know that masks, particularly in public areas and during flu season, can decrease the chances of breathing in virus-contaminated droplets. Therefore, make sure you mask up during the risky months.
4. Practice Respiratory Etiquette
Manners cannot be taught but can always be inherited. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow while coughing or sneezing, properly dispose of used tissues and wash your hands afterwards.

6. Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals
This one goes without saying, limit contact with those showing flu symptoms and encourage them to seek medical attention. If you’re feeling unwell, stay home to prevent spreading the virus.
Bottomline
