Delhi Sees Surge In Influenza B, H1N1 Cases Across Age Groups, Say Doctors

Just when we thought that Delhi had moved past its share of infections and outbreaks, the city is again grappling with another. With winter transitioning into summer, Delhi is witnessing a sharp increase in flu cases, with influenza and swine flu making it to the top, affecting individuals across all age groups. Multiple hospitals in the city have reported a significant spike in individuals coming up with flu-like symptoms, including high fever, persistent cough, fatigue, and upper respiratory tract infections. This surge in patient turnout raises concerns about the spread of viral infections like Influenza B and H1N1.

As per the experts, this spike in flu cases has significantly affected all age groups, including children, adults, and the elderly. There has been a significant increase in the number of hospitalisations, especially in individuals with pre-existing health conditions. To curb the spread, health authorities are monitoring the situation closely and encouraging timely medical intervention for those exhibiting severe symptoms.

Why Are People Falling Severely Ill This Time?

It is believed that the mutations of flu viruses, particularly Influenza B and H1N1, may be contributing to the surge in the number of infections and severe respiratory symptoms. Apart from that, low vaccination coverage in India has heightened the vulnerability of individuals to the virus.

Even though annual flu vaccinations are recommended for everyone above the age of six months, many people tend to take it lightly and skip it, leaving them vulnerable to severe infections. The lack of immunisation has resulted in longer recovery periods, severe symptoms, and higher hospitalisation rates this season.

Bottomline

The sudden surge in Influenza B and H1N1 cases across Delhi has raised serious concerns, particularly among the vulnerable groups. However, through timely medical intervention and symptomatic treatment, the condition can be easily managed.

The best way to protect oneself from severe infections is to get the annual flu vaccination administered, maintain hygiene, and avoid crowded spaces during peak seasons. As Delhi continues to grapple with rising flu cases, staying vigilant and informed can help individuals protect themselves and their loved ones from falling severely ill.
