Inadequate sleep may increase the risk of mental health issues in students
An improper sleeping pattern can cause various mental health issues in students.
Proper sleep is the basic step towards a healthy life. Adequate sleep helps your body function properly and also provides you the required energy to start the next day. Earlier many studies have highlighted the adverse effects of inadequate sleep. A new study highlights the bad effects of insufficient sleep on students.
The study was published in the journal Sleep, which explained that lack of sleep can increase mental health issues in students such as anxiety, self-harm and the idea of committing suicide.
The study involved 110,496 students out of which 8,462 were athletes. After the study, it was concluded that improper sleeping pattern increased the symptoms of mental conditions by more than 20 percent.
Further, the study elaborated that the risk increased by 21 percent for depressed mood, 24 percent for anger, 25 percent for anxiety, 24 percent for hopelessness, 25 percent for the desire of self-harm, 28 percent for functional problems and 28 percent for suicide ideation.
"It was really surprising to see how strongly insufficient sleep was associated with a wide variety of mental health symptoms among college students," said lead author Thea Ramsey from the University of Arizona in the US.
"The fact that sleep health was so strongly related to mental health is important since the majority of college students don't get the recommended amount of sleep needed for optimal health and functioning," said Michael Grander from the varsity.
