Heart problems are no longer just an old people's disease, as even young individuals are increasingly at risk. Alarming cases of heart attacks and cardiac arrests in young people have emerged in the recent past, raising serious concerns and the question why.
Heart failure occurs when your heart can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. While uncommon among young people, it can still occur in Gen X and Millennials, and trends are only rising. In fact, a 2022 study in France found that the number of young adults (18-50 years old) hospitalised for heart failure has been increasing. This is particularly true for young men, especially those aged 36–50.
Ahead of World Heart Day 2024, OnlyMyHealth interacted with Dr Sudheer Koganti, an esteemed Cardiologist and Heart Failure Specialist at Citizens Speciality Hospital, Hyderabad, who not only shared the factors that contribute to the increasing rise of heart failures among young people but also shares tips to mitigate the risk. The article focuses on the urgent need for greater awareness and preventive measures to address heart health across all age groups.

Factors That Contribute To Increasing Heart Failure Rates Among Young People
“The rise in heart failure among Gen X and Millennials is being driven by several factors. One of the most significant contributors is the increased prevalence of lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, which are linked to poor diet, lack of physical activity, and high levels of stress,” said Dr Koganti.
He added, “Many younger adults are engaging in sedentary activities for prolonged periods due to work-from-home arrangements and increased screen time, which further compounds the risk of cardiovascular issues.”
According to the previously mentioned study, the main cause of heart failure in young people was ischaemic heart disease, which is often linked to risk factors like obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

How Do Lifestyle Choices Influence Heart Health?
Dr Koganti emphasised the importance of lifestyle choices in managing heart health. He said, “Many Gen Xers and Millennials are opting for processed foods, fast food, and diets high in sodium and unhealthy fats. This diet, coupled with sedentary habits and increased use of alcohol and tobacco, significantly heightens the risk of heart disease. Additionally, chronic stress, often due to work pressure or financial instability, also contributes to the increased risk of hypertension and heart failure.”

Recognise The Warning Signs
Early warning signs of heart failure in younger adults can be subtle but should not be ignored, said Dr Koganti. These include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath during everyday activities, swelling in the legs or ankles, and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.
If these symptoms occur, it is essential to consult the doctor for further evaluation and testing, the doctor concluded.
