Dry eyes are one of the most typical eye issue people encounter during the summer. Many people find themselves enduring the uncomfortable sensation of dry eyes when the temperature increases and the sun shines brightly. Dryness, discomfort, and even clouded vision can result from a combination of high heat, humidity, and UV (Ultraviolet) exposure. To learn about how to manage dry eyes in summer, we spoke to Dr Ajay Sharma, Ophthalmologist and Chief Medical Director - EyeQ.
What are Dry Eyes?
Dry eyes occur when your eyes don't produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can cause discomfort, irritation, and even vision problems.
Globally, it has been observed that the prevalence of dry eye ranges from 5% to 34% among individuals, and this prevalence notably rises with advancing age, as per a 2016 document on dry eye disease by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
Reasons and Management for Dry Eyes Conditions During Summer
Following are the reasons for dry eyes during summer and their management tips.
The Heat Index
The probability of getting dry eyes increases as the mercury rises and the sun's rays become more intense. Put it down to the heat! Dr Sharma said, "Your eyes get dry and unpleasant due to the faster evaporation of the moisture in your tears as a result of the higher temperatures."

"Try to find shade or spend more time inside during the warmest times of the day to avoid this," suggested Dr Sharma. "If going outside is inevitable, shield your eyes from the sun's glare using sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat," he added.
He further said that you can minimise excessive tear evaporation and maintain a more comfortable environment for your eyes by limiting your exposure to intense heat.
The Abyss of Air Conditioning
On sweltering summer days, air conditioning is such a wonderful reprieve. While it offers relief from the sweltering heat, it also contributes to the drying out of your eyes. "The use of air conditioners reduces interior humidity levels by removing moisture from the air. As a result, your eyes may become more susceptible to dryness and irritability," Dr Sharma explained.
"Consider using a humidifier to restore moisture to the air to combat this, especially in the room where you spend the majority of your time," he recommended. He also advised using lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moist and taking regular pauses from air-conditioned areas to allow eyes to acclimatise to natural humidity levels.
Squinting and Sunglasses
We are all aware of the significance of shielding our skin from UV rays, but what about our eyes? "Dry eyes may be exacerbated by excessive UV exposure. The amount of moisture on the surface of your eyes is reduced when you squint in the bright sunshine," said the expert.
Dr Sharma advised wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection anytime you go outside on sunny days to combat this. "This will not only protect your eyes from the sun's damaging rays, but it will also lessen squinting and keep your tears at a more comfortable level," he added.
Habits of Hydration
Hydration is not only important for general health, but it can also help prevent dry eyes in the summer. "Dehydration may result from higher temperatures, increased outdoor activity, and perspiration," added Dr Sharma.
"To keep your body hydrated during the day, try to consume 4-6 litres of water," he advised. He said that proper hydration promotes tear production and aids in keeping eyes lubricated. "Set reminders or carry a water bottle around as a visual reminder if you struggle to remember to drink water," he suggested.

Electronics And Eye Breaks
We frequently find ourselves engaged in activities like surfing through social media or reading e-books on our electronic devices while spending more time outside during the summer. "Because of the decreased blink rate and increased eye strain caused by prolonged usage of digital screens, you might develop dry eyes," said the doctor.
"When using digital gadgets, try to take frequent breaks and adhere to the 20-20-20 rule, which states that you should look away from your screen and concentrate on something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes," he suggested.
"By relaxing your eye muscles and promoting normal blinking, you can avoid dryness. To keep your eyes moist and healthy while using digital gadgets, make a conscious effort to blink more often," he added.
Conclusion
Understanding the causes and taking preventive steps can help ease discomfort and maintain healthy eyes. Dry eyes can be a typical problem throughout the summer. "But you can enjoy the summer with better eye comfort and general well-being using artificial tears, staying hydrated, shielding your eyes from the sun, and maintaining proper eye hygiene," concluded Dr Sharma.
