How To Make Your Hair Smell Good Everyday: Know From An Expert

Besides influencing personal appearance and aesthetics, hair plays a vital role in protecting the scalp from Ultraviolet (UV) radiation and regulating body temperature. This is why maintaining hair health is crucial to prevent issues like breakage, thinning, and scalp problems, promoting both physical comfort and self-confidence. One of the major concerns when it comes to hair health is unpleasant hair odour. In conversation with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Monica Chahar, Chief Dermatologist and Director, Skin Décor, New Delhi, delves into the science behind bad-smelling hair and what you can do about it.

What Makes Your Hair Smell Bad?

“The primary cause of bad-smelling hair lies in the accumulation of natural oils, sweat, and environmental pollutants,” says Dr Chahar, adding, “These substances create a breeding ground for bacteria, which feast upon the organic matter, emitting foul-smelling compounds as byproducts. Furthermore, fungal infections like scalp ringworm can contribute to malodour due to the release of volatile compounds.”

According to Cleveland Clinic, certain medical conditions, including seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), hormonal changes, and psoriasis can cause smelly scalp.

Hygiene Practices To Embrace For Fragrant Hair

Here are some tips to make your hair smell good everyday:

Regular shampooing

According to Dr Chahar, regular cleansing is the cornerstone of maintaining pleasant-smelling hair. “A quality shampoo, enriched with natural ingredients, gently eliminates excess oils and dirt, preventing bacterial overgrowth,” she says.

Scalp exfoliation

Just as we exfoliate our skin, our scalp deserves attention too. Periodic exfoliation removes dead skin cells, reducing the chances of bacterial buildup and odour formation.

Proper drying

Dr Chahar warns against leaving your hair damp for extended periods, as it can create a breeding ground for microbes. Ensure thorough drying, as moisture-laden hair is more susceptible to bacterial growth.

Use of conditioner

Using a conditioner not only promotes hair health but also helps seal the hair cuticles, preventing excessive oil secretion and tangling that can contribute to unpleasant odours.

Natural remedies

Incorporating natural remedies like rose water, tea tree oil, and aloe vera can have antimicrobial properties, helping combat bacteria and fungi that contribute to bad odours, says the doctor.

Maintaining a balanced diet

Your hair's scent is influenced by your body's internal health. A balanced diet rich in nutrients ensures your scalp's health, indirectly affecting your hair's fragrance.

Avoid over-styling

Excessive use of styling products can accumulate on the hair, attracting dirt and pollutants, which in turn can lead to odour. Opt for minimalistic styling routines, Dr Chahar recommends.

What Is Scent Layering?

Scent layering is another strategic approach that can help attain a fragrant hair odour, as per Dr Chahar.

“It involves using products with complementary fragrances, starting with a scented shampoo, followed by a matching conditioner. Post-shower, applying a hair mist or serum with a similar fragrance seals the deal, ensuring your hair exudes a consistent, appealing aroma throughout the day,” she says.

Conclusion

A bad-smelling hair can be annoying and something that may seem unavoidable. However, it is manageable with the right practices. “Regular cleansing, proper drying, and embracing natural remedies can work wonders in maintaining hair that is not only healthy but also pleasantly fragrant,” Dr Chahar shares, concluding, “By adopting these practices and understanding the science behind hair odour, you can confidently let your hair be a reflection of your hygiene and self-care.”
