Stepping outdoors in summer can be challenging with the intensity of the scorching heat you are exposed to. It is often accompanied by several health conditions like heat stroke, fatigue and dehydration. Not only this, one of the common issues that concern most people is sun tan.

The darkening of the skin after prolonged exposure to the sun is referred to as tanning. It is a defence mechanism of your body to protect itself from the sun. It occurs when melanin, a pigment located beneath the skin, multiplies and forms a barrier over the skin exposed to the sun. The skin's pigments act as armour to shield it from UV radiation and potential harm.

How To Avoid Sun Tan In Summer

Sunscreen Is A Must

One of the most important things you should never miss is using sunscreen. It serves as a barrier between your skin and the sun's damaging UV rays. While choosing a sunscreen, select the one with an SPF of at least 30, which shields against UVA and UVB radiation. Apply it to your skin at least every two hours when outdoors.

Use A Sunblock

Do not confuse sunblock with sunscreen. Sunscreen aids in converting the sun's UV radiation into heat, which is then allowed to gradually cool off. Sunblock, on the other hand, protects the skin by creating a physical barrier over it. Although both are beneficial, sunblock can be applied and worn if you plan to travel to the beach or will be outside for a longer time.

Start Exfoliating Your Skin

You can minimise sun tan by exfoliating your skin. It also serves additional benefits like replenishing and cleansing your skin. Stay Hydrated

Choose Right Clothes

If you want to avoid getting tanned in summer, make sure you wear protective clothing. This includes wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting, and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. This helps you stay cool and also protects you from heat. You can even wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses for protecting your face, eyes and neck.

Stay Indoors If Possible

Until it is necessary, try staying indoors, especially between 10 am-4 pm, when the sun is at its peak. When going out, don’t forget to apply sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and sunglasses, and replenish your body with fluids. Try to walk in shade or use an umbrella to prevent further damage. In addition to making your skin darker, prolonged exposure to the sun can also make your skin wrinkle.
