The monsoon season brings with it the pitter patter of raindrops, the earthy scent of petrichor, and a lush green landscape. However, beyond the beautiful green view, the prolonged rain and gloomy skies can also trigger a range of emotional responses. For many, the persistent downpour is more than just a weather pattern; it can lead to significant mood swings and affect mental health.
Monsoon mood swings can be quite a rollercoaster. One moment, the soothing sound of rain can make everything feel calm and peaceful, and the next, the gloomy skies might bring a sense of melancholy. It is like nature's own emotional symphony. In this article, we will dive deep into the impact of extended monsoon periods on our psychological well-being, exploring how the seasonal shift can influence everything from our energy levels to our overall mood.
To understand the impact of this seasonal shift on our mood, OnlyMyHealth spoke to Sargun Bedi, Counselling Psychologist, Founder, Lucid Mind, Delhi NCR.
“Monsoon mood swings can refer to the emotional fluctuations or changes in mood that people might experience during the rainy season. Prolonged rain can have various effects on mental health, both positive and negative, depending on individual experiences and coping mechanisms,” Sargun Bedi said. Here are some ways in which prolonged rain might affect mental health include.
1. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Prolonged periods of rain and reduced sunlight can contribute to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in susceptible individuals. “SAD is a type of depression that occurs at certain times of the year, usually in the fall and winter months but can also occur during prolonged rainy seasons. Symptoms may include low mood, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, changes in appetite, and difficulty concentrating,” Bedi said.

2. Mood Changes
The shift from bright sunny days to overcast skies and rain can affect our mood. “Sunny days often bring energy and positivity, while cloudy, rainy weather can sometimes lead to feelings of lethargy or sadness,” Bedi said. While some people may find the sound of rain soothing and calming, others may feel gloomy or irritable due to the lack of sunshine and outdoor activities. The dark and dreary atmosphere can sometimes exacerbate feelings of sadness or loneliness.
3. Sleep Disturbances
“Changes in weather patterns, such as prolonged rain, can disrupt sleep patterns. This disruption can lead to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating during the day,” said Bedi. Adequate sunlight exposure helps regulate our internal biological clock, so reduced sunlight during rainy seasons can impact sleep quality.
4. Social Isolation
Prolonged rain can lead to social isolation as people may be less inclined to go out or socialise. Reduced social interaction can contribute to feelings of loneliness and exacerbate mental health issues.
5. Social Interactions
Monsoon can affect social interactions as well. Plans might get cancelled due to rain, leading to disappointment or isolation. On the other hand, cosy indoor gatherings or activities can foster a sense of closeness and comfort.
6. Stress and Anxiety
For some individuals, prolonged rain and its associated challenges (such as transportation delays, waterlogging, or damage to property) can cause stress and anxiety. "Uncertainty about weather conditions and their impact can also contribute to heightened anxiety levels," explained Bedi.

7. Outdoor Activities
Monsoon often restricts outdoor activities, which can impact mood. If you enjoy outdoor sports or activities, being cooped up indoors due to rain might lead to frustration or boredom.
8. Coping Strategies
On the positive side, rainy weather can encourage people to engage in indoor activities that promote relaxation and creativity, such as reading, cooking, or art. Some may find comfort in cosy environments or the opportunity to slow down and take a break from hectic routines.
Therefore, it can be said that monsoon mood swings are a combination of physiological, psychological, and environmental factors that vary from person to person. While some may find the monsoon refreshing and invigorating, others may find it challenging due to its impact on mood and daily routines. Overall, the impact of prolonged rain on mental health varies widely among individuals. Advising, Bedi said, "It is important for individuals affected by these changes to be aware of their mental health and seek support from friends, family, or mental health professionals if needed. Developing coping strategies and maintaining a balanced routine can also help mitigate the negative effects of prolonged rainy periods on mental well being."
