How Do Chemical Laden Holi Colours Harm Your Skin?

Holi, the vibrant festival of colours is celebrated marking the end of winters and the start of spring. In this festival, powder of various colours are applied on each other’s faces and body. However, amidst this joyous atmosphere, there is a silent danger that lurks in the form of chemical-laden colours that can create problems for your skin.

Earlier, Holi would be played with gulal and flowers or natural colours. Nowadays, the markets are filled with chemical laden colours which can cause harmful effects on skin. These colours, often made with harmful chemicals, can lead to various skin problems, ranging from mild irritation to severe allergic reactions. Let's delve deeper into how these colours harm your skin and what precautions you can take to protect yourself.

According to a study published by Indian Journal of Dermatology, a number of cases of itching, burning sensation, pain, oozing, and scaling are seen post holi.  “A large number of patients consult dermatologists over the few days immediately following Holi for skin problems arising out of celebration with these colours,” the study stated.

To understand how Holi colours harm our skin, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Joy Shah, Dermatologist, Founder of Beagle Lasers, Surat.

How Do Holi Colours Harm Skin

The colourful holi powders can brighten the celebration of holi but they also pose a good risk to the health of your skin. “These shades, which are packed with harsh materials, heavy metals, and artificial dyes, can cause a wide range of skin problems, from allergic responses and irritation to more serious ailments like dermatitis and eczema,” Dr Shah said.

The Holi colours contain harmful toxins like lead mercury, and industrial dyes. These chemicals can irritate your skin resulting in allergic reactions and even long term health issues.

Dr Joy further said, “Our skin is a sensitive ecosystem that absorbs everything it comes into contact with, not an impenetrable barrier. These substances seep into the skin's layers, upsetting its equilibrium and causing harm in their wake. The aftereffects linger long after the end of the celebration, causing irritation, dryness, and even chemical burns.”

The abrasive nature of these chemical loaded colours can cause micro-tears in your skin making it susceptible to infections. Additionally, the synthetic dyes used in these colours can stain your skin, sometimes leading to prolonged discoloration.

Furthermore, many of the chemicals used in these colours are not water-soluble, making them difficult to wash off. This means that even after the celebrations are over, traces of these colours can linger on your skin, continuing to cause harm.

In order to protect your skin from harmful effects of chemically made colours, it is crucial that you take some precautions. Dr Shah advised to go for natural and organic colours which are made of plant based ingredients to avoid any damage to your skin. You can easily make these colours at home.

Apart from choosing the right colours, protect your skin before stepping out to play Holi. Apply moisturiser or coconut oil generously to your body and hair to create a protective barrier between your skin and the colours. It will also help you wash off the colours easily from your skin.
