Our scalp is just as sensitive to Ultraviolet (UV) rays as the rest of our skin, and when it gets sunburned, it can be surprisingly painful, itchy, and flaky. If you’ve ever run your fingers through your hair and winced because your scalp felt tight or tender, that’s likely sunburn. The good news is that fancy products aren't necessary to fix it. Some simple home remedies can provide speedy relief and cure your scalp gently, without the drama.
How Do You Know It’s Scalp Sunburn?
Scalp sunburn might show up as:
- Redness or pink discolouration along the part line or hairline
- Tenderness or burning on the scalp
- Flaking or peeling skin (often confused with dandruff)
- Itchiness or tightness
- In more severe cases, blisters
Home Remedies to Soothe a Sunburned Scalp
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a natural skin soother, providing instant relief with its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties that calm burning sensations in seconds.
How to use it
Use fresh aloe gel if possible. Gently apply it to the affected area, leave it on for 20 minutes, and rinse with cool water. If you must use store-bought aloe, ensure it is alcohol-free and fragrance-free.

How to use it
Warm a small amount of coconut oil in your palms and gently work it into your scalp with a soothing massage before bed. Follow up with a mild shampoo the next morning.
3. Cold Compress for Immediate Cooling
If the burn is hot and constricting, a cold compress will reduce the inflammation immediately.
How to use it
Soak a soft cloth in chilled water or cooled chamomile tea for added relief. Squeeze out the excess liquid and place the cloth on the affected area for about 10-15 minutes to calm the skin.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse
It may seem counterintuitive to apply vinegar to a burn, but ACV can be diluted to balance the scalp's pH level and soothe itchiness while it begins healing.
How to use it
Mix one part of ACV with three parts of water and pour it over your scalp in the shower. Leave for a minute or two, then rinse out with cool water. Do this only after the initial sting has worn off and never on broken or blistered skin.
5. Oatmeal Scalp Soak
Oatmeal is very calming for irritated or inflamed skin and can help eliminate itchiness in the healing stage.
How to use it
Grind plain oats into a powder and steep them in warm water for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture to obtain a milky liquid, which can be used as a scalp rinse or applied gently to problem areas using a soft cloth.
