High fibre has many health benefits which include weight reduction. In a recent study, researchers claimed, high-fibre intake can reduce the risk of lung cancer.

A recent study has claimed that the consumption of high fibre diet helps reduce the risk of lung cancer. Researchers from 'Vanderbilt University' have found that high-fibre foods and yoghurt help reduce the risk of lung cancer.
The research is based on an analysis of data from a survey of 1.4 million adults in Europe, United States and Asia, published in the journal 'Jama Oncology'. In which senior author Xiao-Yuu Shu, professor at Vanderbilt University, stated, "Our study provides strong evidence to support the USA 2015-2020 dietary guideline, which recommends the inclusion of high fibre and yoghurt in the diet."
How was the study done?
- For this study, participants were divided into five groups according to the amount of fibre and yoghurt. It found that those with the highest yoghurt and fibre consumption had a 33 per cent lower risk of lung cancer in comparison to those who did not consume yoghurt and fibre content.
- Xiao-Yuu Shu said that its adverse effects were currently seen in smokers, first smokers and non-smokers (whether men or women). Shu stated that prebiotics (non-digestible food that promotes the growth of beneficial microbes in the gut) and probiotic properties could be developed.
