The scorching heatwave gripping Kolkata has prompted the Met Department to issue a red alert across several districts of West Bengal. With temperatures soaring and humidity levels peaking, the state capital has recorded a staggering 41 degrees Celsius, coupled with a humidity level of 85 per cent. As the mercury continues to rise, experts caution residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard against the relentless heat.

According to meteorological reports, extreme heatwave-like conditions are forecasted for various regions of West Bengal, particularly from Sunday onwards. Anticipated temperature spikes of 4-7 degrees Celsius above normal levels have raised concerns among officials. Panagarh in West Burdwan district recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at a blistering 44 degrees Celsius. Other districts such as Midnapore, Bankura, and Jhargram have also experienced scorching temperatures, with readings reaching 43.5 degrees Celsius. The severity of the situation has prompted the declaration of a red alert in districts including East Midnapore, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, and Birbhum, where extreme heat conditions are expected to persist until Monday.
