World Brain Day 2020: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)?

World Brain Day 2020: Have you ever wondered what our brain is and how it works? How does our mind tell us about something right or wrong? Do you wonder why this happens when we walk on the street and when we see a person or a relative of our identity, a smile comes on our face and the body language changes? It's because of the brain, which is the power that instructs the whole body. You can understand that our body is just a puppet in front of our mind. The human brain is powerful, and it is almost impossible to rebuild such a machine. Many questions related to the human mind are still unresolved for scientists around the world. Every year, World Brain Day is celebrated on 22 July. Today, we are telling you about Glioblastoma Multiforme, a type of tumour that spreads and proliferates, often creating pressure.

Glioblastoma Multiforme

Glibalostomus (also known as GBM) is a malignant grade IV tumour. Glioblastoma is a moss of brain cells, called astrocytes, that become abnormal and form tumours very rapidly and very aggressively. Glioblastoma patients develop symptoms due to the effect of rapid pressure from the tumour itself or from the fluid surrounding the tumour (oedema), which subsequently leads to inflammation in the brain. For example, common symptoms of diagnosis are related to increased pressure in the brain (nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches that are usually more frequent in the morning). The patient may also show neurological symptoms that are dependent on tumour location (e.g., weakness or facial changes, balance deficits in hands or feet, and behavioural abnormalities, etc.). Other common presentations include caesars. Radiation and chemotherapy can weaken the patient's immune system, and the patient may be infected with Kovid 19 infection. If a patient is currently receiving chemo or radiotherapy, then these patients going to the hospital should follow the help of doctors and follow the appropriate social distance protocols. If possible, teleconsultation can be better for the patient, and it can protect the patient from unwanted exposure to the environment," states Dr Pranjal Pandey, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad.

  • Unknown Causes of Glioblastoma Multiforme: Even the exact reasons for this tumour are still unknown, and rare anomalies point out the possibility of this brain cancer. Genetic radiations,  mutations, exposure to viral infections and highly toxic chemicals are some of the causes that attribute towards Glioblastoma.
  • Symptoms of Glioblastoma: While having sigs of GBM, do you know that more than 50% of the patients face the problems of fits? However, there is a remarkable reduction in neurological controls and memory. Moreover,  all this can lead to loss of vision, a decline in the movement of limbs, speech and hearing imbalance and impairment. Early morning nausea and headaches for short durations, seizure hemiparesis are some such signs of glioblastoma multiforme.

  • Treatment of GBM: For treatment, the nature of the brain tumour should be assessed. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is seen to benefit maximum of the patients. However, stereotactic biopsy observed with radiation should be given with small tumours. What can be the side effects of this treatment? It could be seizures, headaches, fatigue and anaemia. A nutritious diet is essential for sailing through the problematic treatment procedure.

Main Functions Of The Brain

Our mind contributes a lot in running our body or in making any decision. Our brain works by keeping the heart healthy, preventing breath from becoming uncontrolled, maintaining body temperature and stabilizing blood pressure. You can understand it that when we hear any good or bad news, our breathing becomes fast or the body temperature starts changing, in that case, the brain controls it. At the same time, with the help of different senses, the brain tells us about the process around us by seeing, touching and tasting. What we are getting involved too, several responses, our brain controls all these movements. The brain also gives us the power to think and understand.

Interesting Facts Related To Brain

  • Whenever anything happens to us (whether it is good or bad), the brain immediately informs the body and then our body responds accordingly.
  • An average person blinks about 20 thousand times a day. Due to which the person remains blind for an average of 30 minutes a day.
COVID
  • If the brain does not get oxygen for about six minutes, it can still work. However, if there are more than 6 minutes, there is a risk of brain damage.
  • Apart from humans, animals also have brains, but they lack discretion. The human mind can imagine anything and find a solution to the problem.
  • An average person's brain weighs up to 3 pounds, i.e. 1 kg 500 grams, which is made up of more than 75 per cent water, 10 per cent fat and 8 per cent protein.
