Diwali 2023: Expert Shares First Aid Tips For Burns From Crackers

Diwali, the festival of lights, is widely celebrated with enthusiasm and delight. However, the Diwali festival also comes with danger, particularly for people who are eager to light fireworks or crackers. Cracker burn cases are frequent during Diwali, and understanding how to administer first aid quickly is important to minimise damage and promote speedy healing.

How To Understand Burn Severity

Burns are categorised into three main types: first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree. First-degree burns are superficial, affecting only the outer layer of the skin. Second-degree burns penetrate deeper, causing blistering, and third-degree burns are the most severe, damaging all layers of the skin and possibly underlying tissues. Identifying the severity of a burn is crucial for determining the appropriate first aid measures.

How can one get relief from cracker burn?

According to Dr Khushali Lalcheta, Consultant Physician, HCG Hospitals, Rajkot, to get relief from a cracker burn, follow these steps:

  • Immediately cool the burn with cold water for 10-20 minutes.
  • Gently clean the area with mild soap and water.
  • Apply an over-the-counter burn ointment.
  • Cover with a sterile non-stick bandage.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Seek medical attention if the burn is severe or covers a large area.

How can one guess the degree of burn from a firecracker?

“Determining the degree of burn from a firecracker is important. First-degree burns cause redness and mild pain, typically superficial. Second-degree burns lead to blistering and more intense pain. Third-degree burns are deep, often with charred skin and numbness,” said Dr Lalcheta.

First aid tips for 2nd degree cracker burn

According to WebMd, if someone is facing a second degree burn, both the outer layer and the dermis (the layer beneath the skin) have been affected.  The skin will be bright red and swollen, with a glossy and moist appearance. There will be blisters and the burn will be painful to touch.

For a second-degree cracker burn, Dr Lalcheta advises to follow these first aid steps:

  • Cool the burn with cold, running water for about 10-20 minutes.
  • Gently clean the area with mild soap and water.
  • Apply a sterile, non-stick dressing.
  • Elevate the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for proper evaluation and potential wound care.

Before rushing to the hospital, Dr Lalcheta advises to follow tips such as:

  • Cool the burn with cold water.
  • Gently cleansing with mild soap and water.
  • Applying a sterile, non-stick dressing.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers for pain.
  • Do not use ice or adhesive bandages.

However, it's essential to seek prompt medical evaluation for serious burns, especially if they cover a large area or involve the face, hands, or genitals.

All across, celebrating diwali with crackers adds to the festive spirit, but it is essential to prioritise safety. Being prepared with knowledge of first aid for burns and taking preventive measures can make a significant difference in minimising the impact of accidents during this joyous occasion.
