Many people feel thirsty or the need to drink fluids frequently and more than others. If you feel the need to drink water after eating something spicy or post physical activity, then it's acceptable. But numerous people get thirsty more than usual and except those factors too. You may think of this as normal and hydrating yourself. However, there is a possibility that you may be having a hidden medical condition behind this. It is a good habit to drink enough water in a day, but the recurrent thirsty feeling can be dangerous for your body. If excessive thirst indicates an underlying major disease like diabetes, it is a condition known as polydipsia. The first thing to keep in mind is to know when you are feeling unexplained thirst. The need to drink water is most commonly felt due to dehydration, spicy or salty food and exercise. However, there are other causes behind it too. In fact, serious diseases can also be a factor responsible for excessive thirst in people.

  • Vomitting
  • Diarrhoea 
  • Diabetes
  • Heart, liver or kidney failure
  • Blood loss can also be a factor causing frequent thirsty feeling
  • Psychogenic Polydipsia is when a person drinks a lot of water due to mental disorder 
  • There are certain medicines that make you feel thirsty frequently 

What to do for excessive thirst?

Try making some lifestyle changes like taking a nutritious diet. However, if you are experiencing the symptoms of diabetes or if you already have diabetes and an increased thirst since a number of days, then your should surely consult your doctor. Your doctor may tell you to take various blood and urine tests to diagnose the issue. There might also be a need to provide family medical history as diabetes can be hereditary too. The treatment for this problem will depend on what your diagnosis is. However, you should talk to your doctor even if you want to try any remedy at home.
