Experiencing a burning sensation while urinating can be uncomfortable and may be indicative of various underlying causes. One common cause is a urinary tract infection (UTI), but other factors may contribute to this symptom. 

“Urinary tract infections or bladder infections can affect anyone, however they are more common in women due to the proximity of the urethra and vagina. UTI is caused by bacterial infection of the bladder and its tube. The infection is caused by the E. coli bacteria,” said Dr Vikram Kalra, Sr Consultant & Additional Director, Nephrology & Renal Transplantation, Aakash Healthcare  .Here's what you need to know about its symptoms. 

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Basically the  symptoms of urinary tract infection is a burning sensation during urination, frequent urge to urinate, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. Sometimes pain in the lower abdomen is also felt.  Antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional. Increased fluid intake, avoiding irritants like caffeine and alcohol.

Kidney Stones 

According to Dr Shrirang Bichu, a nephrologist at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai, the majority of kidney infections have symptoms similar to UTIs, such as urethra infection (urethritis), bladder infection (cystitis), painful urination and it can also cause burning sensation while urinating. 

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Certain STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause a burning sensation during urination. Antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Dehydration

Insufficient fluid intake can result in concentrated urine, leading to irritation and a burning sensation. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day, and if you are prone to urinary infections, consider drinking unsweetened cranberry juice or herbal teas known for their UTI-fighting properties," said Dr Vikram Kalra, Sr Consultant and Additional Director, Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, Aakash Healthcare. 

Interstitial Cystitis

A chronic condition causing bladder pain and irritation. Frequent urination, pelvic pain, and a persistent urge to urinate. Individualized, may include medications, lifestyle changes, and physical therapy.

Bladder Infection (Cystitis)

As per WebMd, you may feel compelled to pee frequently, or you may have discomfort when you pass urine. You may also feel lower abdominal pain and murky or crimson urine.

Inflammation of the bladder, often caused by bacterial infection.  In this case, antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Vaginal Infections

Infections like yeast or bacterial vaginosis may cause external irritation. Itching, discharge, and discomfort. If you have a burning feeling when urinating, visit a doctor for a precise diagnosis. They may run tests, such as a urinalysis, to determine the underlying cause. Prompt and correct diagnosis is critical for effective therapy and symptom relief.
