Unhappy With Your Skin Texture? Expert Shares Tips To Follow

Do you have rough, uneven, or dull skin texture? You're not alone. Skin texture issues can emanate from various factors, including ageing, environmental stressors, and improper skincare habits. To help you get your smooth, healthy-looking skin back, we spoke to Dr Sanjeev Dermatologist, Sharda Hospital - Noida. Here's how he shares expert tips on getting the job done.

Understanding Skin Texture Problems

Skin texture is the superficial quality of the skin. Healthy skin should be supple and smooth. However, several factors may cause a rough or uneven texture, such as:

1. Dead Skin Cell Buildup

Dead skin cells will continue to pile up in the absence of exfoliation, creating dullness and rough patches.

2. Dehydration

Moisture deficiency can give the appearance of being dry and flaky.

3. Ageing and Collagen Loss

As we age, the production of collagen reduces, which causes sagging and textural changes.

4. Sun Damage

UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, which causes rough skin and pigmentation issues.

5. Acne and Scarring

Past breakouts can leave scars and uneven skin surfaces.

6. Lifestyle and Diet

Poor nutrition, lack of hydration, and excessive alcohol or smoking can impact skin texture.

Expert Tips to Improve Skin Texture

According to Dr Gulati, here’s how you can improve your skin texture:

1. Follow a Consistent Skincare Routine

Dr Gulati advises everyone to maintain a daily skincare routine that involves cleaning, moisturising, and protecting against the sun. Follow this one to begin with:

  • Use a mild cleanser that removes all dirt and excessive oil without drying out the skin's natural moisture.
  • Apply a light, oil-free, and non-comedogenic moisturiser to hydrate the skin.
  • Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for protection against UV damage.

2. Exfoliate

Regular exfoliation removes dead cells and unclogs pores. Chemical exfoliation (AHAs, BHAs) makes the skin look and feel smoother or you may also turn to physical exfoliation (scrubs). Make sure to exfoliate one to two times a week for optimal results.

3. Hydrate

Drinking enough water and hydrating products will make a big difference. Additionally, for that extra hydration, apply hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides as a part of your skincare. Dr Gulati suggested using a humidifier in dry climates to maintain hydration in the skin.

4. Invest in Retinoids

Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives) can increase cell turnover and enhance collagen production. Therefore, begin with an over-the-counter retinol or see a dermatologist for prescription-strength options. Apply retinoids at night and always follow with sunscreen during the day.

5. Healthy Diet and Lifestyle Choices

Healthy skin starts from within. According to Dr Gulati, "Eat foods that are high in antioxidants such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Limit sugar and processed foods, which cause inflammation. Get enough sleep so your skin can repair and rejuvenate itself."

Bottomline

The process of attaining a smooth texture and even skin surface involves time, regularity, and the right approach to caring for the skin. Improve your skin's condition and feeling with these tips underpinned by experts such as Dr Sanjeev Gulati. However, in case you still experience issues with the skin texture, see a dermatologist for expert opinion and treatment.
