Cancer patients who exercise regularly are found to have a better prognosis than inactive people. Thus, exercising is a must.
Physical fitness should not be a choice but a lifestyle habit. Other than increasing overall strength and fitness, there are so many other benefits of regular workouts that may leave you stunned! Recently, researchers have found that exercising regularly can inhibit cancer cell growth. If you find this beyond believing, you must read the entire study.
How does exercising help in cancer control?
Cancer is one of the most frightening diseases that no one wants to experience. Life is very tough with cancer and existing patients can very well understand the struggle. People who are living with cancer must exercise daily to prevent the growth of cancer in their bodies. Researchers have found that cancer patients who are physically active have a better prognosis than others. This is because exercising increases the metabolic rate that attacks cancer cells.
The journal eLife published a study based on exercising and cancer. As per an experiment conducted by Karolinska Institutet, Sweden on mice, it was found that exercising reduced cancer growth in their body. Physical activity changed the metabolism of cytotoxic T cells(immune cells) that can attack cancer cells. There are studies that state morning workouts can prevent breast cancer.
One of the researchers explained: “The biology behind the positive effects of exercise can provide new insights into how the body maintains the health and help us design and improve treatments against cancer.”
Why cytotoxic T cells are important?
Cytotoxic T cells are basically white cells that are important in managing overall health. Before conducting the study, researchers removed these T cells from the bodies of the mice to understand their importance. It was found that T cells are significant in exercise-induced suppression of cancer cells. Certain metabolites increase the activity of T cells by altering their metabolism. Not only mice but researchers also examined these in humans and found similar results. Those dealing with cancer fatigue need to get into the active mode.
According to the first author: “Our research shows that exercise affects the production of several molecules and metabolites that activate cancer-fighting immune cells and thereby inhibit cancer growth. We hope these results may contribute to a deeper understanding of how our lifestyle impacts our immune system and inform the development of new immunotherapies against cancer.”
Now that research has proven the importance and effectiveness of exercising for cancer patients, we need to incorporate this practice into our routine. Exercising daily for at least 40 minutes would keep your health in place.
