According to a study conducted by The Center of Healing (THOC), around 74% of people suffer from stress issues. Stress can hamper your mental health and exercise is one of the best and oldest remedies. You might not be able to go out for exercise on a regular basis, but there are activities that work similar to exercise which can help you provide relief from stress and calm you down.

During stressful days, reaching out for remedies could be challenging. You just need to focus on some day-to-day exercises in order to relieve stress. Here are some exercises that you would be surprisingly reduce your stress-

1. Yoga

Yoga helps in relieving stress as the yogic postures provide core strength. Core strength could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disorder. Yoga results in peacefulness, balance physical and mental strength to get a relaxed state of mind that brings down stress. You can do the following yoga exercises in order to relieve stress.

1. Pranayama - The yogic exercise that focuses on breath helps in combating stress and improving cardiovascular functions.  

2. Uttanasana - Also known as “standing forward bend pose”, this stretches your back muscles and calms the mind.

3. Chakravakasana- Usually called as Cat-cow pose deals with synchronized breath movements that aid in relaxing and reducing stress

4. Janu Sirsasana - Head to knee forward bending pose lengthens spine, massages abdominal muscles. This pose calms the central nervous system to relieve stress.

5. Setu Bandha Sarvangasana - Also known as Bridge Pose, this opens up chest muscles, improves digestion. It alleviates stress and mild depression.

2. Walking

One of the most basic forms of exercise is walking and it can reduce your levels of stress. It lowers the production of stress hormones, i.e. cortisol levels in the body and alleviates self-confidence. According to a study by the US based National Institute of Health, brisk walking could reduce conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, cholesterol and type-2 diabetes. Walking releases tension from major muscle groups and deepens breathing. It also makes your nervous response better.

3. Gardening

Gardening is a kind of low-impact workout which could relieve your daily stress. This activity could alone burn around 200 calories in half an hour. Gardening has been scientifically proven to have stress busting benefits. Apart from relieving stress, it also makes your environment greener and gives you fresh air.

4. Dancing

Grooving to the music has both physical, emotional and mental health benefits. It provides agility to the person and increases heart rate. Increased heart rate is linked to lower levels of stress. Dancing can reduce the risk of dementia. Dancing also gives you happiness that eliminates stress.

5. Circuit Training

This is an alternative for weight training. It has a mixture of cardio exercises along with some short breaks in between. Circuit training comes under high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout regime. This makes the person sweat and pumps his body’s endomorphin levels. It is able to tackle your stress effectively.

6. Tai Chi

Also known as “Meditation in Motion”, Tai Chi is a form of Chinese martial arts, which links physical movement to mental stress. It helps in channeling your energies from everyday worries to focussed thinking. Tai Chi gives you a clarity of thought and builds self-confidence.
