Do you also fall for the ‘just one bite’ trap when you see an irresistible plate of momo or a cheesy pizza? While one-time junk eating is not considered harmful, several such episodes surely are. We are all aware that eating ultra-processed foods is bad for health and in the present times of food adulteration, it is all the more catastrophic.

Are you also under the impression that eating junk food once in a while is okay and does not harm our health? You might be wrong. A report published in The Lancet shows the catastrophic health consequences of ultra-processed foods(UPFs) on every vital organ of the human body, including the colon.
To get more insights on the destructive effects of ultra-processed foods, we reached out to Dt Deepali Sharma, Clinical Nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, who shared, “Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are extremely harmful for the body, not just because of their high calorie content, but also because they negatively affect multiple organ systems. Regular or excessive consumption of UPFs significantly increases the risk of chronic diseases and even premature death.”
Can Ultra-Processed Foods Cause Colon Cancer?
Ultra-processed foods can damage the heart and blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and heart-related mortality.
“Many UPFs are high in sodium, which contributes to high blood pressure. They can also cause digestive issues and disrupt gut health due to their low fiber content and the presence of additives. Long-term intake is associated with a higher risk of colon or colorectal cancers,” shares Ms Sharma.

How Ultra-Processed Foods Affect Our Organs?
While it is known to one and all that unhealthy foods only affect our weight and cholesterol, it is not true. Ultra-processed foods can affect all the organs of our body.
“UPFs may also affect brain health, slow down metabolism, and impact the pancreas by reducing its ability to release insulin, raising the risk of diabetes. Additionally, increased UPF consumption has been linked to cancers such as breast and prostate cancer,” explains Ms Sharma.
Why Are Ultra-Processed Foods Bad?
The main problem lies in the ingredients commonly found in UPFs: added sugars, excess sodium, unhealthy fats, artificial flavorings, and chemical additives. At the same time, these foods lack essential vitamins, minerals, macronutrients, and especially fiber, which is crucial for healthy digestion. The chemicals and additives used during processing can disrupt the gut’s pH balance and contribute to various digestive problems.

What Should You Eat Instead?
Are you wondering what you should actually eat for healthy organs and overall well-being? Here are some suggestions by Ms Sharma:
- Focus on fresh, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- Always read food labels carefully, pay attention to the nutrition facts and ingredient list.
- Limit ultra-processed foods to an occasional treat rather than consuming them daily.
- Ideally, restrict them to 2-3 servings per day or even less, depending on your dietary needs.
- Cooking fresh meals at home using ingredients you trust is one of the best ways to reduce UPF intake and maintain overall health.
Final Word
Ultra-processed foods are definitely bad for health when consumed daily or on a regular basis. However, if you can control your cravings and manage your portions, it is alright to have ultra-processed foods once in a blue moon. However, consult a dietitian to understand your potential health risks and take necessary steps for disease prevention.
