Diabetes, which was earlier an old-age health concern, is now widespread among kids too. This health concern is now equally familiar in kids as old as eight years old
People who have Type 2 diabetes face extreme difficulties in controlling their blood sugar level. Mostly diagnosed in mid-life, this type of diabetes was earlier common only in adults. In this condition, the patients feel more thirsty, urinate frequently and also feel hungry most of the times. Obesity is a common syndrome in those who have Type 2 diabetes. However, in a recent study, this diabetes type was also seen in kids as old as eight years old.
This diabetes type shows symptoms, which progress over the years. Study researcher Joshua Bell from the University of Bristol in the UK said, "Almost every participant was diabetes-free, and most will also not develop symptoms soon. This study is all about analysing the situation with genetics and how the disease can develop in individuals."
About The Study
In this study, around 4,000 participants in the early 1990s were included. It was shocking to see how symptoms of early type 2 diabetes were seen in kids even around the age of 8. This can be a reason for unhealthy food habits and lack of exercise in kids. Also, this health concern is occurring more in women than in men. The disease is more common for people who are overweight. Usually, BMI is higher in people over 32. It can also happen due to genetic reasons.
Managing Type 2 Diabetes
Sugar and refined carbohydrates are significant sources of weight gain. Obesity and unhealthy food habits majorly lead to type 2 diabetes in most cases. Diabetes management can very well be done at home. Will taking your regular medication, one should ensure to take less amount of sugar, avoid trans fat and fatty food items. Heavily relying on sweet food items adds to the insulin levels in the body.
Make sure that you teach good habits in kids when it comes to food. MAke then eat a fibre-rich diet. Fibre contributes significantly to the absorption of sugar from the blood. That is the reason why each kid should be encouraged to eat wheat, brown rice, etc. to regulate the blood sugar levels in the body.
