Expert Shares When To Start Screening To Flag Obesity Risk in Children

Childhood obesity is a developing worldwide concern with long-term health implications that may go well into adulthood. Ranging from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure to emotional problems such as anxiety and low self-esteem, the implications are extensive, therefore keeping an eye is the way forward. What many parents want to know is when exactly should you start obesity screening. To understand this, we reached out to our expert, Dr Ganesh Jevalikar, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Endocrinology, Max Hospital, Gurugram. Here is what he shared with us.

Dr Jevalikar stressed that prevention comes first through early intervention. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) both suggest repeated BMI (Body Mass Index) screening from age 2 years and above. During this age, physicians can begin tracking a child's growth patterns in order to determine if they are developing normally, at risk of becoming overweight, or already showing signs of weight issues.

“Overweight and obesity don't happen overnight, either from a single result of genetics, environment, diet, and activity level or from a series of slip-ups,” Dr Jevalikar highlighted. Early detection provides an opportunity to identify red flags before they become a health problem. A child identified as at risk can receive straightforward, family-based lifestyle modifications like healthy eating, more exercise, less screen time, and improved sleep habits.

Obesity In School-Age Years: A Critical Window

Whereas screening starts at 2 years, the school years (six to 12 years) are especially important. Children are more independent in their diets, commonly exposed to fast food and sweets. With less activity and increased screen time, this is when poor habits can begin. Regular growth monitoring during regular well-child visits can avoid eventual weight problems.

Obesity In Teen Years and Beyond

By adolescence, excess weight can speed up threats for insulin resistance, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in females, joint problems, and even early indicators of cardiovascular disease. Ongoing surveillance during annual health check-ups continues to be crucial. Interventions at this age also may need to address emotional eating, peer pressure, and body image concerns.

What Parents Can Do To Screen Obesity In Children

Dr Jevalikar also highlighted what parents can do to screen obesity in children. These include:

  • Schedule regular pediatric appointments and have BMI monitored.
  • Promote healthy, home-cooked meals with portion control.
  • Encourage a minimum of 60 minutes of active play every day.
  • Establish screen-free areas in the home to restrict sedentary time.
  • Be a role model, kids learn by observing adult behaviour.
