5 Early Signs of Diabetes

Diabetes is referred to as modern time epidemic. Type 2 diabetes or the adult onset diabetes is more common than type 1 diabetes

diabetes early signsDiabetes should be diagnosed as early as possible because the disease causes several complications and can be deadly if not detected in time. It is important to be aware of the early warning signs of diabetes as the condition does not cause very noticeable symptoms in many cases.

Early warning signs of diabetes may include the following.

Feeling tired (particularly after eating)

You may feel sluggish and ready to take a nap immediately after your meal. The reason behind this is a normal response to an influx of carbohydrates. A diet high in carbohydrates (such as white flour, sweet beverages and sugar) makes you insulin resistant which in turn makes you feel sleepy and you may find it hard to think.

Being overweight

According to the Duke University's Beth Reardon, most of the prediabetics weigh more than they should. It is worrisome because you try to cut back on calories and still can't see the scale budge. Even if you limit calories, what little is absorbed also goes straight into storage as fat.

Food cravings

Diabetics crave for foods such as sweets, chocolates, chips, and fried foods. These foods contain simple carbs such as sugars and white flour that break down quickly and provide a fast hit of energy.  This may lead to a drop in blood sugar as the extra insulin quickly provides glucose to the cells.

Weight gain

If you are obese, you are at greater risk of diabetes. Also, weight gain is one of the complications of diabetes. Addition of pounds in one particular area (the midsection) is directly related to insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is linked to several health conditions. When accompanied by weight gain and fatigue, diabetes may be the cause. Losing weight slowly through dietary changes and increased exercise can help those in the situation.

Sex problems

Diabetes affects sex drive and can cause conditions such as erectile dysfunction in men. Women may find difficulty, discomfort or pain during intercourse. High blood sugar levels damage the nervous and circulatory systems which are important for normal sexual function.

Other warning signs

Dry mouth and increased thirst, increased frequency of urination during the night, blurred vision, dry itchy skin/patches of darkened skin, slow-healing sores or frequent infections, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, frequent or recurrent skin/gum/bladder or vaginal fungal infections are among other early signs of diabetes.

Some people try to ignore the early warning signs of diabetes until their blood sugar reaches dangerous levels. They may need hospitalization at times and it can even cause death. The damage due to the disease starts even in early stages. Diabetes can damage your eyes, your kidneys and your cardiovascular system.

If you have symptoms suggestive of diabetes, do not ignore them - consult your doctor as soon as possible.
