“Dry Fruits And Nuts Do Not Cause Bleeding Or Abortion”: Gynaecologist On How To Consume Dry Fruits And Nuts During Pregnancy

Eating dry fruits and nuts does not pose a risk of maiscarriage, claims Dr.Anjali Kumar, a Gynaecologist and the founder of Maitri, an online community for women’s reproductive health.  “Dry fruits are not just safe - they're a nutritional powerhouse for expecting moms! Almonds, walnuts, dates, and figs are packed with healthy fats, iron, fibre, and essential vitamins that boost energy, aid digestion, and support the baby's growth,” Anjali says in an Instagram video.

Anjali’s video addresses a common myth among Indian women that claims nuts and dry fruits should be avoided during pregnancy as they may lead to a miscarriage. However, the claim is absolutely baseless as there is no scientific evidence to support it. In fact, nuts are known to be rich in protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals like magnesium and folate, which are the key nutrients for pregnant women. To add to their rich nutritional value, the presence of fibre in nuts and dry fruits helps in digestion and prevents constipation, a common foe during pregnancy.

The Myth

Anjali says that there is a common misconception in Indian women which claims that eating dry fruits and nuts may cause bleeding or abortion.

Don’t eat almonds during pregnancy, It would cause you a miscarriage,” Anjali mimics how the misconception is often suggested by older women and goes on to debunk the unscientific claim. "Eating dry fruits during the first trimester or any other time in pregnancy does not cause any bleeding or abortion. The bleeding or the abortion occurs from other serious gynaecology reasons. Dry fruits are actually safe and beneficial in pregnancy," she says.

Contrary to the myth, dry fruits are in fact quite beneficial during pregnancy for multiple reasons. They are nutrient-dense and provide healthy fats like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are important for the baby's brain development.

Anjali adds that ‘moderation’ was key while consuming dry fruits during pregnancy. “Dry fruits are calorie-dense, so stick to a small handful a day. Also, skip the salted or sugar-coated ones,” she says. The well known gynecologist also shared some tips on ‘Whats’ and ‘Hows’ of the consumption of dry fruits and nuts during pregnancy.
