Family history of any disease means it is non-modifiable and hence can only be prevented and controlled in severity of manifestation. Heart diseases, such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and cardiomyopathies can run in your family. Therefore, it becomes important to take measures to avoid the development of these diseases. We spoke to Dr Pankaj Vinod Jariwala, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, who listed do’s and don’ts that you should follow to prevent hereditary diseases.
Dos and Don'ts For Avoiding Heart Diseases That Runs In Your Family
Dos
Healthy Diet
“You should always maintain an adequate diet which is composed of all the nutrients. Foods that promote heart health, such as eggs, proteins like lentils and beans, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and berries, should be included in a regular diet”, said Dr Jariwala. Also, there should be a control on portion size and a reduction in fried foods, salt and sugar in excess. Snacks like junk food should be avoided and instead be substituted with fruits and salads.
Exercise
Exercise is the most effective way of keeping yourself fit and healthy as it reduces the risk of disease development significantly. You should aim to avoid living a sedentary lifestyle and engage in activities, such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, or any other activity for at least thirty minutes a day.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, regular participation in moderate- to high-intensity exercise improves the cardiac muscle. This can help your heart pump blood more efficiently to your lungs and other body parts. As a result, the oxygen content in your blood increases and more blood flows to your muscles.
Know the History
“When one learns about the possibility of familial heart disease, it is important to inquire within the family about the disease, its onset, warning signs, severity, and complications experienced by family members”, said Dr Jariwala. Going on the internet and trying to research online should be avoided as it can be misleading. Further guidelines for genetic testing should be taken from the doctor.
Don’ts
Smoking and Drinking
These habits are highly unhealthy for anyone but increase the risk significantly for people with a family history of cardiac diseases. Smoking and drinking increase the load on your heart and damage it. Rapid deterioration of health is observed if these habits persist.
According to Alcohol Research and Health, smoking increases the risk of almost all types of cardiovascular disease, such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, congestive heart failure, and peripheral arterial disease.

Ignore Signs and Checkups
“Sometimes the disease may not show symptoms until it is too late. It is advised to go for checkups regularly and keep yourself updated. Constant monitoring and care help reduce the severity and is hence essential”, added Dr Jariwala.
Stress About Your Situation
It is important to remember that, even though family history cannot be changed, following the doctor's advice can greatly reduce the risk. This is why fretting about the condition psychologically should be avoided. You should also take steps to manage stress by practising meditation or yoga.
