Skincare enthusiasts are always on the lookout for natural, affordable, and effective remedies to achieve glowing, healthy skin. Among the many DIY treatments, coffee and egg masks have emerged as a popular choice, thanks to their unique combination of benefits. Both coffee and eggs are everyday kitchen staples, but when used together in skincare, they can work wonders for your face.
Regarding the same, we reached out to an expert and asked about whether it brings an effect on the face or is just a gimmick.
Coffee is known for its exfoliating and antioxidant properties, while eggs, particularly egg whites, are celebrated for their ability to tighten and tone the skin. Together, these ingredients create a powerhouse mask that can help rejuvenate your skin, leaving it smooth, radiant, and refreshed.
Dr Arushi Suri, Consultant Dermatologist & Aesthetic Medicine, Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jaipur, explained that a mask made of coffee and egg whites has been used for tightening the skin reducing puffiness and brightening the complexion due to the antioxidant properties of caffeine and proteins.
However, she believes that it can do more harm than good, especially for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. There is a risk of a mild to severe allergic reaction to both the ingredients esp eggs along with a risk of salmonella infection which may be present in raw eggs if consumed by mistake or applied on wounds or breaks in the skin from where bacteria could enter. It could also lead to a massive acne flare-up.
Before a person applies egg whites to their face, they should do a patch test and ensure that there is no redness, itching, swelling, or other signs of an allergic reaction. The expert further suggests choosing safer alternatives or consulting a dermatologist for science-backed solutions.

Benefits of Coffee in Skincare
When not mixed with egg, coffee does provide certain benefits to the skin and some of them are mentioned below.
- Exfoliation: Coffee grounds serve as a natural exfoliant, effectively scrubbing away dead skin cells.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: Coffee is rich in antioxidants, particularly chlorogenic acid, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and calm irritated skin.
- Brightening Effects: The caffeine in coffee can help improve blood circulation when applied topically, potentially leading to a brighter complexion.
- Antioxidant Protection: Coffee contains a variety of antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, which can lead to premature ageing signs such as fine lines and wrinkles.
Benefits of Egg in Skincare
On the other hand, eggs do contain elements that are beneficial for skincare when used alone.
- Skin Tightening: Egg whites are known for their skin-tightening properties due to their high protein content.
- Oil Control: Egg whites can absorb excess oil from the skin, making them particularly useful for those with oily or combination skin types.
- Pore Minimisation: Using egg whites in a mask may help reduce the appearance of pores, contributing to a more refined skin texture.
- Nutritional Support: While egg whites primarily provide protein, they also contain small amounts of vitamins and minerals that may benefit overall skin health.
Conclusion
As the doctor advised, using coffee and egg masks together can be harmful, so it’s better to choose other traditional skin care methods. However, when used separately, both coffee and eggs can be good for your skin. Coffee can help exfoliate and brighten your skin, while egg whites can tighten and reduce oiliness. If you want to enjoy the benefits of these ingredients, consider using them in different masks on different days.
