Not All Lumps Are Cancerous: Understanding The Difference, Signs And Treatment For Breast Cancer

Finding a lump in or around the breast can freak you out. First thought that occurs to your mind after feeling a lump is cancer. The word ‘cancer’ can be scary and many people call it by the ambiguous term “the bad disease”. Breast cancer cases are on the rise and while understanding what it may present as is life threatening, it is important for all women. However, not every lump is cancerous.

To understand the difference, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Karishma Kirti, Consultant Breast Specialist and Oncoplastic Surgeon, Mumbai.

Relieving cancer-related anxiety of many women, Dr Kirti said, “It is important to understand that every breast lump, pain and nipple discharge is not cancer. In fact, 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, which means no cancer. Benign tumours are generally slower growing and softer to feel and more movable within the breast. Sometimes there can be more than one in number and / or present in both the breasts.”

How can you differentiate between the two types of lumps? Explaining this Dr Kirti said, “Regular breast self-exams and clinical screenings are the first line weapons. If you notice any changes in your breast tissue, it is essential to not panic and to meet your doctor without unnecessary delay. There is no sure shot way of telling cancer from non-cancer at home, or even in the clinic without a few tests. Remember that more often than not, it will be a non-cancer cause.” Ignoring it will not make it go away but only increase it!

Surgical options may include breast conservation surgery or mastectomy, sometimes along with plastic surgery. Additional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy are also utilised to eradicate cancer cells and prevent recurrence.”
