Coronavirus: Herd Immunity Can Be An Effective Remedy Against Coronavirus. Know What It Is

Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc. The lockdown period across India is May 3 to keep the infection limited, which is now almost nearing its end. But given the increasing cases of coronavirus, the question in mind is that the lockdown till May 3 is enough? Meanwhile, experts are discussing that the lockdown can be stopped for a few days, but the virus will start spreading rapidly once it is removed. In such a situation, these experts are now coming out with the theory of 'Herd Immunity'. So let's know what this herd theory is?

What is Herd immunity?

Herd immunity is an ancient process, which has been in practice in medical science. Under this, a specific part of the country's population is infected with the virus for which they generate immunity in themselves against this virus. That is antibodies to the virus in their body. If herd immunity is implemented, 60 per cent of the population will be infected with the coronavirus. After this, when they become immune to this disease, then antibodies can be prepared for this virus by taking antibodies from their body. Then this vaccine will cure other people.

According to the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy, and a team of researchers at Princeton University, Washington, the theory of herd immunity in India can be successful because of the large population of young people, mostly infected with the virus. Besides, the herd immunity would also benefit those who have survived from the virus attack because vaccines made from antibodies will enable easy treatment.

How Does The Herd Immunity Work?

In herd immunity, the virus infects large populations in three ways:

  • First of all, it infects the community or group which is not immune to the virus, i.e. they have low immunity.
  • Second, some people may be immune, but others in the community are not immune.
  • The third way is to immunise the whole community so that when the virus tries to spread, it can infect very few people.

Some Advantages Of The Herd Immunity Process

By applying the process of herd immunity, it is also known how much of the country's population is being affected by it. Also, how much the virus has spread. That is if a person is infected with a virus, then how many more people can get affected by that person. Also, the elderly can also be protected from this. No country can withstand a long lockdown and especially a country like India. In such a situation, the elderly will have to reach a point of herd immunity by avoiding infection by taking all necessary precautions and preventions. In this way, the theory of herd immunity can prove beneficial in many ways.
