Study: AsthmaTuner Mobile App Can Help In Controlling Asthma Problem

As per a recent study published in the European Respiratory Journal, there is a mobile application that can regulate the problem of uncontrolled asthma. Researchers say that this app first calculates the lung function of the person and then gives feedback in the form of a machine-generated recommendation of doctor-prescribed treatment.

Those who frequently suffer uncontrolled asthma experience asthma attacks or problems in breathing. Generally, this condition arises either due to incorrect medicines or insufficient management. The study done by researchers from the Karolinska Institute shows that a treatment adjustment algorithm that works on the basis of symptoms and lung function in a smartphone can efficiently help manage the problem of uncontrolled asthma.

This application is very easy to use. To measure the lung function, the phone is connected to a wireless spirometer to conduct this process. The application records the respiratory symptoms of the user and then give automated feedback stating the possible treatment.

This application is named ‘AsthmaTuner’ which is to tune your respiratory system, mainly asthma. “This app analyzes lung functions and asthma symptoms in accordance with asthma-care guidelines,” said Bjorn Nordlund, research lead at Karolinska Institute.

The users of this app also get a picture of the inhaler with whose help this process will be done. “This comes with a set of instructions that are to be followed throughout including if the medication that you are on needs to be increased or decreased or to be maintained as it is,” Nordlund added.

AsthmaTuner allows measuring lung function through a wireless spirometer which is connected to the application. This study was carried on 77 patients aged above six years with uncontrolled asthma problem. Most of them were children & adolescents.

"We could see that asthma symptoms improved more with the digital tool than they did with traditional care. Adult patients who used the tool at least once a week also more often remembered to take their medicines," said Nordlund.

If you too are a patient of frequent uncontrolled asthma, try this application.
