Common triggers of seizures

Seizures are unpredictable and can make people suffering from epilepsy feel uncontrollable. But, it is important to be aware about all the potential triggers for seizures as it can help in early diagnosis and control of seizures. According to Dr. Sumit, here are the 5 most common triggers of seizures:

1. Caffeine and alcohol

alcohol

Many doctors advise not to drink alcohol when on anti-epileptic drugs Since alcohol can often make anti-epileptic medications less effective, most doctors advice against alcohol consumption along with the drugs. Even in people not diagnosed with epilepsy, binge drinking can sometimes induce a seizure, and therefore it must be avoided. Many energy or carbonated drinks, caffeine shots and pills, and over-the-counter flu medicines contain high doses of caffeine. Before consuming any of the above, be sure to consult your pharmacist or epileptologist. Caffeine can also induce seizures in some individuals as it is a stimulant.

2. Sleep deprivation

A major trigger for seizures can be sleep deprivation. Working night shifts should be avoided by epileptic patients since it can cause problems in sleeping properly, resulting in increased seizures. Consult your doctor or a specialist if you are also dealing with insomnia. Avoid caffeine in the later hours of the day and try maintaining a healthy sleep cycle. Power off your digital devices an hour before your bedtime to give your brain some time to properly relax.

Breathing techniques, yoga or mindful meditation, exercise or breathing techniques for relaxation can be helpful and effective in dealing with anxiety.

4. Skipping meals / dehydration

Your body needs to stay hydrated through the day, and consuming enough fluids is essential. Seizures are more likely to be triggered if your body is dehydrated, more importantly when you are exercising. Adequately hydrating yourself is also necessary during a hot and humid weather, or when you are suffering from diarrhoea and/or vomitting. Seizures are also more like to happen when people with epilepsy have low blood sugar levels, and eating regularly timed meals throughout the day can help you avoid triggering a seizure. If you are thinking of going on a weight loss diet, Always consult your doctor or specialist if you plan on starting a diet focused on weight control or a calorie deficit.
