The persistent pain in your lower back could be more than just a muscle ache. There is a chance that your kidney has developed stones which is causing this utter discomfort.
Kidney stones are abnormal, hard, chemical deposits that form inside the kidneys, and this condition is called nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis. At times these stones can be as small as grains of sand, while at other times I can be larger, like the size of a pea, a marble or could be even larger. There is every chance that these smaller ones will pass from your urine undetected and without your knowledge. The larger ones are however too big to be flushed from the kidney and cam therefore cause trouble. Some kidney stones do manage to travel into the ureter, which is the narrow tube between the kidney and the bladder. The stones tend to get trapped in the ureter and cause many different symptoms. What could be the symptoms of kidney stones in women?
The Types of Stones
Kidney stones form for a variety of reasons and they can be divided into four different families in accordance to their chemical compositions. These are:
Calcium Oxalate Stones
These account for most kidney stones and several factors increase the risk of calcium oxalate stone formation in the kidney. These are:
• low urinary volume
• high concentrations of calcium in the urine
• high concentrations of oxalate in the urine
• low amounts of citrate in the urine
• extra parathyroid hormone
• high uric acid levels in the blood
• bowel disease
• surgery for obesity
• kidney problems
Such stones are composed of magnesium and ammonia which is a waste product. They are connected to urinary tract infections which are caused by certain bacteria. The occurrence of Struvite stones are less common these days as urinary tract infections are now better recognised and treated. These stones happen to be more common in women that they are in men and develop frequently in people have suffer from long term bladder catheters.
Uric Acid Stones
The uric acid stones form because of an abnormally high concentration of uric acid present in the urine. These are more likely to occur in people who have gout because of an over production of uric acid. The gout disorder is that in which uric acid builds up in the blood and gets deposited in joints.
Such stones are the least common type of kidney stones and are composed of amino acid cystine. This cystine is a building block of proteins andare caused by a defect which has been inherited.
The symptoms of kidney stones are alike for both men and women, and there will be no symptom if your stones are small, and they will simply pass out from your urine. As mentioned earlier, the larger stones get trapped in the narrow ureter. That is when you will experience any symptom, and they are:
• You will experience severe pain in the back or your side.
• You will experience nausea and would vomit.
• You will find blood in your urine which may look pink, red or brown.
The location of pain could shift downward, closer to your groin and this would mean that the stone has travelled downward in the ureter and is now even closer to your bladder. The closer your stone approaches the bladder you may experience a stronger urge to urinate and also experience a burning sensation when you urine.
Another symptom is that when the stones are in the size of grains of sand you may be able to see them when you urinate.
You are advised to visit a doctor in the event of a lower back pain and be sure of its cause, it is best to deal with kidney stones at the earliest.
