Exercising or lifting weights, and dieting are the usual way to lose extra weight, but there are many who would go for the shortcut by popping weight loss pills. Are they good in any way?

Weight loss pills are garnering immense supports from those who do not want to sweat it out in gyms or have little time in hectic schedules to do so. Ayurvedic and synthetic weight loss people are being endorsed by those who want to shed their excess fat easily and without wasting time. However, in this great hurry to lose weight, what people fail to remember that most weight loss pills also have side effects which can vary from being mild to extremely dangerous. 

Digestive problems

The most common side effect of weight loss pill is gastric complaints. There are fat blockers present in most weight loss pills and they lead to indigestion, gas and even diarrhoea. Most of these elements also reduce the body’s capability to absorb vitamins. Vitamin deficiency in the body is a common side effect of weight loss pills and therefore, people on weight loss pills need to take additional multivitamin pills.

Hunger suppression

There are many horror stories which have amply shown how weight loss pills can even kill. Weight loss pills contain an element called sibutramine which triggers the sympathetic nervous system. It suppresses hunger but it can also increase one’s heart rate abnormally which can lead to an attack if not checked in time. Deliriums, hyperactivity, increased blood pressure, hot flushes and insomnia are the additional side effects of the hunger suppression that is done by most weight loss pills. In fact, some people have reportedly suffered from blood clots that have resulted due to increased blood pressure. 

Bodily discomfort

Apart from the fact that some weight loss pills can expose you to the danger of heart attacks, they can also lead to potent bodily discomfort. Not having any control over one’s bowel movements is one such side effect. Increased flatulence and oily stool are some added discomforts that people on weight loss pills might face.

The concern for maintaining healthy weight is completely understandable in a day and age where lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes and obesity are taking their toll. Therefore, the next time you think of resorting to over-the-counter weight loss pills, think again and consult a doctor for advice.
