Comedian Bharti Singh Hospitalised with Gallbladder Stones, Know About Gallbladder Surgery

Popular comedian and television host Bharti Singh has been admitted to the hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain. In a recent vlog shared from her hospital bed, she candidly addressed her fans about her health condition. Initially attributing the discomfort to a gastric issue, Bharti decided to seek medical attention when the pain persisted.

Medical tests revealed the presence of stones in her gallbladder, prompting doctors to initiate necessary treatment. Bharti expressed her distress at being away from her son, Gola, sharing that he was frantically searching for her at home. The emotional toll was evident as she longed for a swift recovery to reunite with her beloved child. The video also offered glimpses of Bharti's husband, Haarsh, who appeared visibly concerned about her well-being.

What Are Gallbladder Stones

“Gallbladder stones, or gallstones, are hardened deposits that occur in the gallbladder, a tiny organ under the liver. These stones can range in size from a single grain of sand to a golf ball. Gallstones are typically made up of cholesterol or bilirubin, a pigment produced by the liver,” said Dr Kavya Dendukuri, Senior Gastroenterologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Risk Factors Of Gallstones

There are several risk factors associated with the development of gallstones, including:

  • Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing gallstones.
  • Poor diet: Diets high in fat and cholesterol and low in fiber can contribute to gallstone formation.
  • Genetics: A family history of gallstones can predispose individuals to developing them.
  • Gender: Women are more likely than men to develop gallstones, especially during pregnancy or when using hormone replacement therapy.
  • Age: Gallstones become more common with increasing age.
  • Certain medical conditions: Conditions such as diabetes, liver cirrhosis, and certain blood disorders can increase the risk of gallstones.

Treatment Options

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), nonsurgical options for gallstones may be advised only in exceptional circumstances, such as if you have cholesterol stones plus a major medical condition that precludes surgery. However, even after treatment, gallstones can reappear, which is why you may need to be treated for gallstones on a frequent basis for a long time, if not your entire life.

“Gallbladder stones seldom dissolve on their own and frequently require surgical intervention. However, several factors may influence the likelihood of non-surgical resolution. Gallstones mostly made of cholesterol are more likely to react to non-surgical treatments, but those containing calcium or bilirubin are less likely to disintegrate without surgical intervention,” said Dr Dendukuri.

While gallstones can be unpleasant and bothersome, with the right therapy and lifestyle adjustments, many people can successfully manage their problem. However, it is critical to contact a healthcare professional for correct diagnosis and treatment.
