Bharti Singh, the well-known comedian, has just announced she is expecting her second child at the age of 41. Bharti and her husband, Haarsh Limbachiyaa, shared the happy news, with adorable photos of Bharti showing off her baby bump in the midst of their travels. She posted scenic pictures of herself from Switzerland, cradling her bump and expressing how blessed the family feels to be expanding again.
Interestingly, Bharti’s weight stands at 71 kilos as she enters motherhood again, sparking discussions about what is considered healthy when planning a second pregnancy.
What Is a Healthy Weight to Conceive Again?

Dr Deepshikha Singla, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist at Civil Hospital Sector 6, Panchkula, explains, "A healthy weight for conception is ideally determined by a woman’s BMI. For most Indian women, a BMI in the range of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered optimal for pregnancy. Starting a pregnancy being overweight or obese can increase risks like gestational diabetes and hypertension. However, many women with higher weights do conceive successfully with proper monitoring and lifestyle adjustments."
The average age for a woman to have a second baby varies by region. However, Dr Singla suggests that women commonly conceive their second child in their early to mid-thirties. "Ideally, the best time for a second pregnancy is when the woman is between 25 and 35 years old, after an optimal gap of at least 2-3 years following the first child,” she added.
Dr Singla also emphasises that "the focus should be on keeping the pregnancy complication-free with regular checkups, a balanced diet, and staying active. Preconception counselling can help with reaching a healthier weight if possible, but emotional and mental readiness is also vital."

Bharti’s reported weight of 71 kilos may place her slightly above the normal BMI category, depending on height. For women above the normal BMI (25-29.9), recommended pregnancy weight gain is slightly less, around 6.8–11.3 kg (15–25 lbs) for overweight individuals.
Pregnancy at a higher weight is doable, but requires more careful monitoring for issues like gestational diabetes and blood pressure spikes. Dr Singla says, "It is not just a number but overall health, routine screenings, and keeping weight gain within recommended limits that matter most during pregnancy."
How Weight Affects Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes
Dr Singla notes that maternal obesity is associated with increased risks, such as:
- Gestational diabetes
- Hypertension and preeclampsia
- Need for induction or caesarean delivery
- Higher NICU admissions for babies
Still, successful and healthy pregnancies are possible at higher weights, especially when issues are managed proactively with medical guidance.
Key Focus Points for Overweight Women Conceiving Again![overweight pregnancy 2 - 2025-10-07T103347.860]()
- Regular screenings and monitoring of BP and sugar levels
- Balanced, nutrient-rich diet (not crash diets)
- Gentle exercise, like walking or prenatal yoga
- Maintaining regular sleep cycles
- Avoiding excess weight gain beyond medical guidance
What Science Says About Weight and Pregnancy Outcomes
A study published in the Journal of Endocrine Society found that women with underweight or overweight BMIs during pregnancy are at higher risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. Underweight mothers tend to have smaller or low birth weight babies, while overweight mothers face higher risks of complications like gestational diabetes, hypertension, and preeclampsia.

Conclusion
Every pregnancy is unique, and while Bharti Singh’s story inspires many, it brings attention to the importance of entering pregnancy with optimal health goals. A BMI within the normal range is ideal, but many women successfully conceive and deliver healthy babies outside these parameters with the right support.
