Pregnancy And Oral Care: What Changes Should You Make?

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey in a woman's life, marked by many physical and hormonal changes. While most pregnant individuals are aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, and regular medical check-ups, the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene during pregnancy often remains overlooked.

Pregnancy can indeed have an impact on oral health. But do you need to change your oral care routine during this period? To know more about it, we spoke to Dr Puja Sabherwal, Paediatric and Aesthetic Dentist, BDS (MAMC), MDS (UCMS), currently practising at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital.

Hormonal Changes and Gum Health

Dr Sabherwal said that during pregnancy, there is an elevated level of progesterone in the body. "This hormone has the potential to induce inflammation in the blood vessels of the gum tissues. As a consequence, the gums become more susceptible to bacteria, leading to the possibility of an infection," she added.

She said that this infection of the gums, referred to as gingivitis, typically manifests in the second trimester of pregnancy. "Its symptoms include gum redness, heightened sensitivity, swelling, and gum bleeding," she added. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 60-75% of women during pregnancy suffer from gingivitis.

Susceptibility to Cavities

Apart from gum health, pregnant women should also be mindful of their susceptibility to cavities. "Dietary changes and the possibility of morning sickness can influence eating habits, potentially leading to an increased intake of sugary snacks," suggested Dr Sabherwal. She added that these dietary adjustments, coupled with hormonal changes, can create an environment conducive to cavity formation.

Gentle Oral Care Practices

Dr Sabherwal advised opting for a toothbrush with softer bristles and adopting more gentle brushing methods. Regular flossing should not be neglected either, as it helps prevent food particles from getting lodged between teeth, which can exacerbate gum issues.

Importance of a Balanced Diet

Dr Sabherwal emphasised that having a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients not only contributes to overall health but also supports dental well-being. She said that limiting the consumption of sugary foods and beverages can significantly reduce the risk of cavities. Furthermore, maintaining a diligent oral care routine involving regular brushing and flossing remains pivotal.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Dental professionals are equipped to provide specialised care tailored to the unique needs of patients during pregnancy. These visits can aid in the early detection and management of oral health issues, ensuring that minor problems do not escalate into major concerns.

"These subtle adjustments can help in both dental well-being and overall good health during pregnancy”, highlighted the doctor.

Conclusion

The hormonal shifts during pregnancy can you more susceptible to gum inflammation and infections, highlighting the importance of adopting a gentler oral care approach. Dr Sabherwal concluded that adjustments in your oral care routine might be necessary to ensure a healthy smile for both you and your developing baby.
