The Centre has revised the list of essential medicines and added anti-cancer and various other drugs.

Centre Cuts Prices Of Anti-Cancer And Other Essential Drugs

The central government of India has released the list of the National List of Essential Medicines for 2022. Around 34 new medicines are added to the list. For the uninitiated, this list contains essential medicines that are commonly used at different healthcare levels. The government ensures that the listed medicines are provided with assured quality at affordable prices. This list is prepared by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW). 

The Centre released the revised list making a total of 384 medicines. The newly added drugs have some anti-cancer, anti-infective and nicotine replacement therapy drugs whose use and demand have increased making them essential for the public. Besides, several life-saving vaccines are also put in the essential category which is going to save many lives. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared this information on Twitter. His tweet reads, “Several antibiotics, vaccines, anti-cancer drugs and many other important drugs will become more affordable."

With this development, more important drugs will be available to the public at affordable rates and with assured quality. The health minister releases the statement,” National List of Essential Medicines 2022 is released. It comprises 384 drugs across 27 categories. Several antibiotics, vaccines, anti-cancer drugs and many other important drugs will become more affordable & reduce patients’ out-of-pocket expenditure."

Essential Drugs

While thirty-four new drugs have been added, around twenty-six medicines including Atenolol, Sucralfate, Methyldopa, Ranitidine, and white petrolatum have been deleted from the new list. The list is updated on the basis of need, availability and cost-effectiveness. If new drugs are better, readily available and less pricey then the old ones are replaced. 

The new list has these medicines:

  • Contraceptives and endocrine medicines- Insulin Glargine, Fludrocortisone, Teneliglitin and Ormeloxifene.
  • Respiratory medicine- Montelukast
  • Eye medicine- Latanoprost 
  • Cardiovascular medicines- Tenecteplase and Dabigatran
  • Anti-cancer medicines- Lenalidomide, Bendamustine Hydrochloride, Leuprolide acetate and Irinotecan HCI Trihydrate

Dr. YK Gupta, Vice Chairman of the Standing National Committee on Medicines, said, "Antinfectives such as Ivermectin, Meropenem, Cefuroxime, Amikacin, Bedaquiline, Delamanid, Itraconazole ABC Dolutegravir have been added to the NLM." 

The prices of the drugs listed in the National List of Essential Medicines 2022 are regulated by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The government ensures that these medicines are made available to everyone in need at a reduced cost.
