Chhath Puja is a deeply devotional festival observed with strict rituals. It includes a 36-hour fast that involves no food or water, long hours standing in water and prayers to the Sun. Many women want to participate fully, including those who are pregnant. But for expectant mothers, this long fast raises serious questions about safety. While this act of devotion is deeply rooted in tradition, the question often arises: Is such a demanding fast safe for pregnant women?
To understand better, we spoke with Dr Chetna Jain, Director, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon.
What the Expert Says About Pregnant Women Fasting![chhath fast Breaking chhath fast]()
Dr Jain is very clear in her advice. “As an expert, I would not advise that. Pregnant women need regular nutrition, hydration, and rest,” she explains. “During Chhath Puja, women fast for 36 hours without food or water, stand in water for long hours, and perform rituals. This puts additional stress on the body, which can be risky during pregnancy.”
She adds that while some women may be physically strong and accustomed to fasting, “a 36-hour fast is very, very difficult, especially during pregnancy. Even during Ramadan, fasting typically lasts around 16 hours, which is still more manageable.”

Why 36-Hour Fasting Can Be Risky in Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the body makes extra demands like oxygen, blood flow, nutrients and hydration are all critical not just for the mother but also for the baby's growth. Dr Jain lists how the longer fasts create risks:
- Dehydration from no water intake can reduce blood flow to the placenta.
- Low blood sugar may cause dizziness, fainting or stress for the mother and child.
- Standing for very long hours or being exposed to heat/weakness may trigger contractions or other complications.
- Chronic conditions like gestational diabetes or hypertension worsen with extended fasting.
If a Pregnant Woman Chooses to Participate — Safe Tips![]()
Dr Jain offers practical pointers for those who, after considering all factors, still wish to observe part or all of the fast:
- Ensure adequate hydration before the fast begins (water, coconut water) and ideally break water deprivation with simple fluids.
- Eat a nutrient-dense, energy-rich meal just before the fast starts.
- Avoid heavy standing, strenuous activity, heat or long exposure in water.
- Monitor baby movements and maternal well-being: any dizziness, nausea, or decreased fetal movement means breaking the fast.
- Make sure the configuration of the event allows you to stop at any time if you feel unwell.
A report published in PMC on religious fasting found that prolonged fasting, particularly without adequate hydration, can raise the risk of exhaustion, electrolyte imbalance, and fainting in those with additional physical demands, like pregnant women
Making the Decision for Yourself![]()
Dr Jain explains that the decision to fast during Chhath Puja while pregnant must balance devotion with health:
- Speak with your obstetrician to evaluate your health, baby’s progress and any risk factors.
- Consider the trimester you are in, your hydration status, medical history, and how your body typically responds to fasting or dehydration.
- Be realistic: a lighter version of the ritual that allows fluid intake or breaks may be more aligned with medical safety while still honouring the spirit of the festival.

Conclusion
The 36-hour Chhath Puja fast is a powerful spiritual act. For pregnant women, the stakes are higher, though balancing devotion and well-being matters. As Dr Chetna Jain underscores, regular nutrition, hydration and rest are non-negotiable in pregnancy. Should you choose to fast, do so under supervision and with flexibility to stop if your body speaks. A faithful observance can still be meaningful without risking maternal or fetal health.
