We live in an era driven by technology, where the younger generation is constantly glued to their digital screens. Laptops, mobile phones, tablets and more, every work requires coming into contact with some form of light-emitting device. Consequence? Eye fatigue, dryness, headache, and disruptive sleeping patterns, which over the time have become a part and parcel of life and everyone has grown to believe these to be normal. This leads to the question: Is this increasing obsession with digital screens behind the rising trend of cataracts in younger generations?
What leads to cataracts?
According to Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu, Director at Jagat Pharma, “Cataracts have always been considered as a common eye concern among senior citizens, but now the emerging trend is making everyone think differently. Accounting for 51% of blindness and 33% of visual impairment in the world, this condition is caused when the natural protein in the lens breaks apart due to ageing. They later join together, blocking the vision and affecting the eye’s lens, located behind the pupil and iris. However, this entire process happens over years, sometimes decades, usually beginning in the late 40s and 50s, and starts severely interfering with daily life only in the 60s.”
Digital devices and cataracts
Blue light emitted from digital devices cannot directly lead to cataracts. It is true that this high-energy visible light penetrates deep into the eyes and can lead to a spectrum of eye issues, including eye strain, disrupted sleep cycles, hazy vision and retinal stress, but it cannot affect the lens to an extent that leads to the development of cataracts. There is limited scientific evidence that links the two. However, blue light can certainly accelerate the process and worsen the existing symptoms of cataracts.
