Mangoes are undoubtedly the favourite summer fruit. Known for their sweet taste and nutritional value, its peel is often discarded. However, mango peels have taken the internet by storm of late and hence captured the attention of researchers. According to several viral Instagram reels and YouTube shorts, mango peels may reduce cancer risk. But how far is this statement from the truth? Let's find out!

To separate water from milk we spoke to our expert Dr Anil Thakwani , Consultant and Senior Oncologist, Sharda Care-Health City and asked if mango peels may hold the key to reducing the risk of cancer?! Here is what he shared with us.

The Power of Polyphenols and Carotenoids

"Mango peels are a treasure trove of potent antioxidants, including polyphenols and carotenoids," Dr Thakwani explained. In simpler terms, these compounds help to combat oxidative stress, a process that can damage cells and contribute to the development of cancer. "By neutralising harmful free radicals, these antioxidants can help protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer," he added.

Mangiferin: A Cancer-Fighting Champion

One particular compound found in mango peels, mangiferin, has been the subject of significant research. “By neutralising harmful free radicals, antioxidants can help prevent cellular damage and lower the risk of developing chronic diseases, including cancer," Dr Thakwani said. 

Fibre: The Digestive Defender

Mango peels are also a good source of dietary fibre, which plays a crucial role in maintaining digestive health. According to an animal study, a healthy digestive system is essential for overall well-being, and a diet rich in fibre can help reduce the risk of colorectal and breast cancer. "Mango consumption can promote regular bowel movements and reduce intestinal toxin exposure, potentially lowering colon cancer risk," he said.

How to Incorporate Mango Peels into Your Diet

While the idea of consuming mango peels may seem unusual, Dr Thakwani shared that there are a few ways to incorporate them into your diet. These may include:

1. Dried Mango Peels

Dry the peels in a dehydrator or oven and grind them into a powder. You can add this powder to smoothies, yoghurt, or other dishes.

2. Mango Peel Tea
