Luckily in the recent years - meal planning apps have emerged as a lifesaver for many, offering streamlined solutions to meal preparation, grocery shopping, and budget management. With a plethora of options available, there's tons of meal planning apps now available at your disposal - but which apps create the best meal plans and which ones are just a waste of your meal planning time.

Well, lucky for you, we've gone through each meal planning app on the market and picked the 7 best meal planning apps as our favorites. Here's what I landed on - hopefully helping guide you through selecting the best meal planning app, focusing on the needs of a busy family looking to save money on food while still having a robust recipe database. Here’s the 7 best meal planners I’ve tested and my new favorite planner of choice.

The Lifesaving Power of Meal Planning Apps for Busy Moms

Meal planning can significantly reduce the stress of preparing family meals. By planning ahead, you can ensure a balanced diet for your family, minimize food waste, and avoid the cost and health pitfalls of last-minute takeout meals. The right meal planning app can make this process effortless, offering features like customizable meal plans, grocery lists, and budget trackers.

My Mom-Approved Criteria for Choosing the Best Meal Planning App

When selecting a meal planning app, I decided to consider the following:

  • User-Friendliness: The meal plan app should be easy to navigate, even in the middle of a hectic day - meal planning should be natural & easy - not just a messy grocery list.
  • Customizability: It must cater to dietary preferences, allergies, and any specific nutritional requirements of my family. We have picky eaters and I need to make sure that everyone is happy with their meal plan!
  • Budget Management: Features that help track spending and suggest cost-effective meals are crucial to a meal planning app that I will actually use on a weekly basis..
  • Time sensitive recipes - I don’t have 4 hours to spend in the kitchen ever day. I’d like each meal to be ready in 15 minutes or less and I want each meal plan to contain similar types of recipes!
  • Grocery Integration: A seamless transition from meal plan to shopping list or a grocery list saves time and money and separates the meal planning apps from the recipe databases - which are great for inspiration, but tougher for actual planning..
  • Family-Friendly Recipes: I looked for a variety of recipes that can appeal to both adults and children. I wanted meal planning to be fun and health - not boring!

The Top 7 Meal Planning Apps for Busy Moms

Here's a quick overview of the best meal planning apps I tested out:

The Best Meal Planning Apps - 2024 Overview

Want to know more? Here's how I decided to rank the following meal planning apps.

1. Ultimate Meal Plans

Website: ultimatemealplans.com

Price: $14/month

Ultimate Meal Plans emerges as the frontrunner as the meal planning app of choice - perfectly tailored to the needs of a busy mom. Its intuitive web app makes meal planning a breeze, offering a diverse array of diet options including keto, paleo, and vegetarian plans. What sets Ultimate Meal Plans apart is its focus on simplicity and efficiency. The web app generates a weekly meal plan tailored to your family's dietary preferences and sizes, accompanied by a comprehensive shopping list that streamlines your grocery trips.

The integrated shopping list not only organizes your grocery needs by category but also helps in managing your food budget by preventing impulse buys. Plus, with a free 14-day meal planning trial trial, you can explore its features without immediate commitment, making it a risk-free option for families looking to optimize their meal planning process.

I really loved the shopping list and online ordering integration which lets you see all your groceries in one go and order them online. It’s basically like a pre-made meal kit service, but where you just pay the grocery costs directly. This feature alone shot this to the top of my list of best meal planning apps.

It also helps that they have both keto diet and aip meal plan meal planning app variations - as we have some special dietary restrictions in our family that not every piece of software can accommodate for. The free version of the meal planner was a no-brainer for testing out and I found that this worked the best for everyone in our family.

2. Mealime

For moms seeking flexibility and health-focused meals, Mealime offers personalized meal plans that cater to your family's preferences and allergies. Its easy-to-use interface and practical grocery list feature simplify meal prep and shopping. Mealime stands out for its emphasis on quick, healthy meals, which is ideal for families juggling a busy schedule.

3. Paprika

Paprika acts as a digital kitchen assistant, allowing you to save recipes, plan meals, and create grocery lists. Its ability to sync across devices means you can access your meal plans and recipes on the go, a handy feature for busy moms. The one-time purchase model also means there's no ongoing subscription fee, offering long-term value.

While I liked Paprika, I found it much more useful as a recipe database and organizer than a meal planning app personally.

4. Yummly

Yummly's strength lies in its vast recipe database and personalized recommendations. It offers recipes and a shopping list, but its real value is in helping you discover new family favorites. The app learns from your preferences over time, suggesting meals that fit your family's taste and dietary needs.

Again, I found yummly much more of a useful recipe app, but when it came to meal planning out my weekly meals day to day, I liked this one better.

5. Plan to Eat

Plan to Eat focuses on the organization of your recipes, meal planning calendar, and grocery list. It's particularly suited for moms who prefer to compile their recipes or find new ones online. The drag-and-drop meal planning calendar and automatic grocery list make it a strong contender for busy families choosing between meal planning apps.

The calendar itself is probably the best and most distinctive feature here, but

6. eMeals

eMeals stands out for its variety of meal plans and partnership with several grocery delivery services (which is becoming more common across the board), making it a great option for moms looking to save time - especially for family meals. From budget-friendly meals to quick-prep options, eMeals offers a plan for nearly every family situation and preference.

I think I heard about eMeals on Dave Ramsey years ago and I don’t love their way of pricing things based on the meals you’re allowed each day. Just let me meal plan everything! It seems annoying and overly complicated in a way that it doesn’t have to be in 2024.

7. PlateJoy

PlateJoy offers highly personalized meal plans, taking into account your family's health goals, dietary restrictions, and even your kitchen appliances. Its smart grocery list aims to minimize waste by suggesting quantities based on your meal plan, a feature that can contribute significantly to budget management and can help keep the costs of meal planning low.

Full disclaimer: I used to be a huge plate joy fan, but over the years, it seems they got bought up by a megacorp and both their site and their app has devolved over the years. I no longer love it the way I used to and started using other apps for my week-to-week meal planning.

The #1 Meal Planner App for Moms - Ultimate Meal Plans

I may have let it slip earlier, but after reviewing the options, Ultimate Meal Plans stands out for its unparalleled combination of ease of use, customization, and budget-friendly features. It acknowledges the diverse needs of a family, offering a range of dietary plans that cater to various preferences and nutritional requirements. The integrated shopping list and meal customization not only simplify the weekly meal prep process but also help busy moms manage their food budgets effectively.

They really bring it home when I can do my online shopping automatically with one-click from the shopping list and have the groceries delivered to my door. It’s magic! This might be my favorite meal planning feature of them all.

The platform's user-friendly interface means meal planning can be done quickly and efficiently, and all the meals are done in less than 15 minutes - a complete game changer. They even have free additional meal planning tools like a meal plan generator and a meal planning template to help you get started - even if you're not a customer yet.

The 14 day trial really sells it as well as you can test it out without any upfront commitment - and you get access to their entire coupon club - which more than pays for an entire year of membership after a couple month.

Wrap(ping) This Meal Plan Up

If you’re a busy mom, you’re already trying your best. Keeping everyone fed with tasty meals on a tight timeline can be tough - even for the best meal planner.

That said - a meal planning app can help - a LOT and choosing the best meal planning app for your family matters.

While all seven meal planning apps offer unique features catering to the diverse needs of families, Ultimate Meal Plans is what I ended up choosing as my new favorite meal planning and grocery shopping tool for me and my family and I just started my free 14 day trial.

No matter what you choose - I wish you and your family a happy & healthy 2024!
