What Is Kalaripayattu?

Kalaripayattu traces its roots back over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest martial arts in existence. Originating in the Southern Indian state of Kerala, it draws inspiration from the animal kingdom, with movements mimicking the agility and strength of creatures like the lion, elephant, and snake.

This form of martial arts is marked by four main components:

  • Meipayattu or Physical Training: Involves rigorous physical exercises to enhance flexibility, strength, and endurance.
  • Kolthari or Weapon Training: Mastery over traditional weapons like staff, swords, and daggers is a key aspect.
  • Angathari or Hand-to-hand Combat: Focuses on strikes, kicks, and grappling techniques.
  • Marma Chikitsa Vital Point Healing: Incorporates knowledge of pressure points for both attack and defence.
