Bio Injectables For Cosmetic Treatments: Expert Lists Its Benefits And Limitations

People often wish they had a tool to keep their skin youthful and radiant for long. With the advancement of technology, cosmetic treatments have emerged as popular options to address signs of ageing and other skin concerns. Out of these treatments, bio injectables have become quite popular. They are often praised as a speedy and effective remedy for different skin issues. However, it's essential to understand their limitations and whether they are truly the magic fix for all skin issues. We spoke to Dr Neha Khuraana MD, Board-certified Dermatologist and Founder, House of Aesthetics, who shed light on the same.

What are Bio Injectables?

“Bio injectables, also known as dermal fillers or soft tissue fillers, are substances injected into the skin to add volume, reduce wrinkles, and enhance facial features”, informed Dr Khuraana. The most common types of bio injectables include hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin (Botox), and collagen.

  • Hyaluronic acid: It is a natural substance found in the skin that binds to water, providing hydration and plumpness. Hyaluronic acid fillers are popular for treating wrinkles, folds, and lips.
  • Botulinum toxin: It works by temporarily paralysing muscles, reducing wrinkles and expression lines, particularly in the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet.
  • Collagen: This is another naturally occurring protein that provides structure to the skin. Collagen fillers are used to add volume to cheeks, lips, and other areas of the face.

According to a review conducted by the Royal Society of Chemistry, The primary distinctions between these products are their crucial properties, which produce distinct effects. These parameters include concentration, rheology, microsphere size, and viscosity.

“Bio injectables have gained popularity due to their minimal downtime, immediate results, and ability to address specific skin concerns. They offer a non-surgical approach to cosmetic enhancement, making them appealing to those seeking subtle and gradual improvements”, added Dr Khuraana.

Can Bio Injectables Fix All Skin Problems?

“While bio injectables can be effective in treating certain skin problems, they are not a magic fix for all. Their suitability depends on the individual's skin condition, desired outcome, and overall skincare goals”, highlighted Dr Khuraana.

Limitations of Bio Injectables

Bio injectables are not meant to address every skin concern. For instance, they cannot remove sun damage, treat acne, or improve overall skin texture. Also, the effects of bio injectables are temporary, lasting anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on the type of injectable used.

What to Expect?

When considering bio injectables, it's crucial to have realistic expectations and understand their limitations. “They are not a substitute for a consistent skincare routine that includes sun protection, cleansing, moisturising, and using products suitable for your skin type”, added Dr Khuraana.

Before getting any cosmetic treatment, it is essential to consult a board-certified dermatologist. A dermatologist can assess your skin condition, discuss your goals, and recommend the most appropriate treatment options, including bio injectables if suitable.

Bottomline

Dr Khuraana concluded, “Bio injectables can be a valuable tool in enhancing facial aesthetics and addressing specific skin concerns. However, it's important to approach them with realistic expectations and understand that they are not a magic fix for all skin problems. A combination of bio injectables, a consistent skincare routine, and a healthy lifestyle can contribute to achieving overall skin health and a youthful appearance.”
