Ayurvedic Treatment for Sunburn

SunburnSunburn is caused due to overexposure of skin to the ultraviolet rays of sun. In initial stage they appear as red coloured rashes on the skin. But in its later stage the skin becomes swollen and painful. Most of the sunburns are mild and get corrected in few days. But constant exposure can even increase risk of skin cancer. Ayurveda focuses on balancing the disturbed dosha. Ayurvedic treatment for sunburn prevents further damage and address skin rashes.

 

Ayurvedic Treatment for Sunburn

  • Mild sunburns can be treated with cool and wet compresses for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat it three times a day.
  • In case of severe sunburn your doctor may prescribe ayurvedic medicines for external applications. Some of them include satadhouta ghritam, aranaalaadi tailam and chandanaadi tailam.
  • Herbal medicines such as Triphala, Amalaki, Manjishtha, Haridra, Saariva, Chandan, Usheer and Gokshur are also effective for treating sunburn.
  • You can even use herbal ointment that contains saariva, chandan, haridra, yashtimadhuk usheer, manjishtha and mandukparni.
  • Mahanarayan oil, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Chandan-Bala-Laxadi oil, Shata-Dhout-Ghrut and Yashtimadhuk Ghrut are commonly prescribed for Sunburn.

 

Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Sunburn

  • Aloe vera gel is the most effective ayurvedic home remedy for sunburn. Take gel of fresh aloe vera leave and apply it on the affected area.
  • One of the easiest and quick treatment option is ice. Apply it directly on the sunburn affected area.
  • Mix 2 tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of lime. Apply the mixture on affected area and wash after twenty minutes.
  • Apply sandal wood paste on the sunburned area. It will give soothing feel and prevent further complications.
  • Make a paste of yoghurt, turmeric and barley and apply on the affected area.
  • Mix equal quantity of white vinegar and water. Dip a clean towel in the solution and wring it. Apply it on sunburned area. Don’t apply on broken skin or near eyes.
  • To get rid of sun tan apply mixture of honey and tomato juice. Tomato helps to lighten skin colour and removes tan.
  • Take cabbage leaves and soak them in ice cool water. When they are cool enough lay them on the affected part of the skin. Cabbage leaves effectively heal sunburns.
  • Make fine paste of neem stems and directly apply on the sunburned area. Unused portion can be refrigerated for further use.
