This is a disease that causes blue or purple marks on the skin. These marks are because of bloated veins, distended in legs and feet. Varicose veins occur because of myriad causes such as standing for long duration or having a sedentary lifestyle. It becomes more common in later stages of life hence adults and older adults are most likely to be affected by this condition. 

This problem is also given in Ayurveda where this condition is ‘Siraja Granthi’ that implies cyst like inflammation in the veins. It can cause blood clots and cause numerous pain hence it is important to treat this condition. There are 5 methods available in Ayurveda to treat varicose veins. 5 Ayurvedic Methods To Treat Varicose Veins 

1. Sariva


Sariva roots are considered beneficial for varicose veins. These roots are covered with plant compounds that hold the quality of boosting the complexion and relieving pain in the veins. The roots that are extracted are used as a medicine or ointment to affected part to treat this vein issue. Sariva roots comprise of blood-purification traits that aid in eradicating toxins and regulates circulation of blood in the body. 

  • Take the roots extract from the sariva roots
  • Crush the roots to make it in a powered form
  • Add little water to make it in a form of paste
  • Apply it directly on the surface of affected varicose veins

2. Eranda (Castor Beans)

This is a ricin based bioactive compound that is used in Ayurvedic treatment and also in use of tincture. Eranda is derived from castor oil which is known to reduce inflammation and relax blood clots. Eranda is also used in case of injury and other problems with tincture. It is a herbal solution to treat varicose veins and banish dark spots that are created with it. For using it, rub castor oil and rub it gently over the area of affected veins. Rub in circular motion gently for about few minutes and then let it absorb into skin.


3. Manjistha

This is also an ayurvedic herb which is used as a medicine in treating varicose veins. Manjistha that is grown in India has high anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing swelling in the lower legs and improve the condition of varicose veins. This herb is effective in balancing the pitta dosh that is impurities present in the blood and improving circulation. It is very beneficial and tested ayurvedic formula for treating varicose veins. It does not have any side-effects and cures injured veins and blood vessels as well. It removes spots and blemishes from the varicose vein skin.

For making manjistha to use-

  • Prepare a powdered preparation of stem of this plant.
  • Mix it with Aloe Vera to make it a paste
  • Apply it on the varicose veins and affected part in thick past form
  • Leave it to dry and absorb in the skin


4. Chirabilva

This herb is taken from Indian Elm Tree. The bark and leaves of the tree are used a medicine to cure varicose veins and other diseases related to tridoshas. Chilrabilva is natural blood purifier which can be used as a medicine to apply on the skin and to eat it as well. This herb provides equilibrium to the affected part and veins. It is also used to consume bark decoction to undo blood clots in the lower legs. It is applied in the form of paste made from the bark extracts of the tree. It minimizes discolouration and cures varicose veins. To make the paste use the bark extract and leaves together to mix it well and then apply it on the affected skin area.

5. Gotu Kola

This is another very beneficial herb that has many positive effects and used in variety of treatment options. Gotu Kola also called Asiatic Pennywort is filled with iron and minerals that are useful in red blood cell synthesis.
