In today's fast-paced world, where stress, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy eating habits have become the norm, the prevalence of diabetes has reached alarming levels.  

For individuals with diabetes, preventing a heart attack becomes a top priority to ensure a healthy and fulfilling life. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 77 million people over the age of 18 have type 2 diabetes, and nearly 25 million are prediabetics. While modern medicine offers numerous treatment options, many people prefer alternative therapies rooted in Ayurveda. Dr Nidhi Dagar, Chaudhary Braham Praksha Ayurvedic Charak Sansthan, listed six ayurvedic herbs for diabetics to promote heart health and prevent heart attacks.

1. Gurmar

Gurmar or Gymnema Sylvestre, is a powerful herb that has been used for centuries to manage diabetes in Ayurveda. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, the herb possesses a wide spectrum of medicinal characteristics, including arthritis and osteoporosis.

Dr Dagar said that it is known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin production and improving insulin sensitivity. By maintaining stable blood glucose levels, Gurmar helps in preventing the development of complications, such as heart disease in diabetics. 

2. Fenugreek

Fenugreek, or Methi, is another popular herb in Ayurveda with potent anti-diabetic properties. It contains soluble fibre and compounds that help regulate blood sugar levels. Dr Dagar said that it also possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can protect the heart from oxidative stress and inflammation. 

3. Tulsi

According to the National Library of Medicine, tulsi is an effective Ayurvedic herb in treating lifestyle-related chronic diseases, including diabetes. It helps in managing blood sugar levels and lowers the risk of heart attacks in individuals with diabetes. Dr Dagar said that it also has cardioprotective effects, including reducing cholesterol levels, improving blood circulation, and preventing the formation of blood clots.


4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been found to enhance insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar levels in diabetics. It also helps in reducing cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and blood pressure. Incorporating cinnamon into the diet can prevent heart attacks in diabetics .

5. Indian Gooseberry

Dr Dagar said that the Indian Gooseberry, or Amla, is a potent Ayurvedic herb known for its rejuvenating and antioxidant properties. It helps in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels by improving insulin secretion and reducing insulin resistance. Not only this, it also aids in reducing cholesterol levels, protecting the arteries from oxidative damage, and enhancing cardiovascular health. 

6. Garlic

Garlic is a widely used herb with numerous health benefits, including its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. It also helps reduce blood pressure, prevent plaque buildup in the arteries, and decrease the risk of blood clot formation. Including garlic in the diet can provide significant protection against heart attacks in diabetics.
