In this fast-paced life, it becomes difficult to prioritise mental well-being amid tight deadlines and hectic schedules. Also, there are a multitude of stressors which challenge mental well-being. Persistent stress and anxiety can adversely impact mental health, subsequently affecting physical well-being. To combat this, we spoke to Dr Shruthi M Hegde, Senior Research Associate, NPI (Discovery Sciences Group), Research and Development, Himalaya Wellness Company, who listed the role of Ayurvedic herbs in improving mental well-being.
Dr Hegde said, “Mental health is influenced by a complex interplay of individual, familial, and social factors.” According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of every eight people lives with a mental disorder. Mental disorders encompass substantial disruptions in cognition, emotional control, or behaviour. Moreover, mental health is an integral part of overall health and well-being and encompasses more than just the absence of mental disorders.
Ayurveda and Mental Health
Dr Hegde noted, “Ayurveda and herbal remedies can contribute to a greater extent to help manage stress and support mental health. Ayurveda, an ancient healing system, places significant emphasis on mental well-being, wherein mental health is regarded as an integral component of overall health and defines health as the ideal balance between the body, mind, sense organs, and soul, complemented by well-regulated physiological functions.”
She added, “Ayurveda and other traditional medical systems offer a rich repertoire of herbs and herbal remedies, many of which are beneficial in managing stress, alleviating anxiety, exerting a calming effect on the mind, and enhancing focus and alertness, thereby promoting mental health.”
