Ltd, Delhi, explains, “Migraines often start when toxins (ama) accumulate due to poor digestion or stress, disturbing these doshas.” For example:

  • Vata imbalance triggers irregular blood flow, causing throbbing pain.
  • Pitta imbalance heats the body, leading to burning sensations or sensitivity to light.
  • Kapha imbalance creates heaviness and dull, persistent aches.
  • Identifying your dominant dosha imbalance is key to personalised treatment.

Ayurvedic Therapies for Immediate Relief

According to the expert, two powerful therapies stand out for migraine management are mentioned below. 

1. Shirodhara: The Soothing Oil Flow

In this therapy, warm medicated oil (like sesame or coconut) is poured rhythmically onto the forehead. “Shirodhara calms the mind, reduces stress, and stabilises Vata,” says Dr. Shukla. It’s ideal for stress-induced migraines and improves sleep quality.

2. Nasya: Cleansing Through the Nose

Nasya involves administering herbal oils into the nostrils. “The nasal passage is a gateway to the brain,” explains Dr. Shukla. “Using oils like Anu Taila (for Vata) or Brahmi Ghrita (for Pitta) clears toxins, enhances mental clarity, and balances doshas.” Regular Nasya can prevent migraine triggers like sinus issues.

Ayurveda emphasises daily routines (Dinacharya) to maintain dosha balance:

  • Prioritise Sleep: Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep, ideally before 10 PM. Irregular sleep aggravates Vata and Pitta. 
  • Practice Yoga & Pranayama: Gentle poses like Balasana (Child’s Pose) or Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) reduce stress and improve circulation.
  • Stay Hydrated: Sip warm water throughout the day to flush toxins. Avoid cold drinks, which slow digestion.
  • Limit Screen Time: Excessive screen use strains the eyes and aggravates Pitta. Take breaks every 30 minutes.
  • Eat Mindfully: Favour warm, cooked meals over processed foods. Pitta types should avoid spicy dishes, while Vata types need grounding foods like soups.
