Are Weight Loss Jabs Safe? UK Regulators Investigate Pancreatic Side Effects After Hundreds Fall Sick

The Rise of Weight Loss Jabs and the Risks

While a direct link to the jabs hasn’t been proven, the incident has triggered a nationwide study and a warning to all users. Weight loss injections, known as GLP-1 drugs, are now used by about 1.5 million people in the UK, roughly 4% of households. They are available on the NHS for people with obesity and related health issues, but can also be bought privately online. Their popularity is soaring, with experts warning they could soon become the most commonly used prescription drug for weight management.

However, the recent UK incident has raised alarms. The MHRA is investigating after hundreds of people reported serious health problems, including pancreatitis, which can be fatal in about 5% of acute cases. The percentages for pancreatitis seen in clinical trials are small, but many people are now purchasing these medications privately. Small percentages in large numbers mean an increasing number of people developing these conditions, although they still remain rare.

What Does the New Study Say?

To know more about the risks, the MHRA and Genomics England have initiated a large-scale study. The aim is to determine whether certain individuals have a genetic risk of developing pancreatitis from these medications. Anyone over 18 years old who has had a severe response to these drugs is invited to take part. They will be requested to describe their experience and give a saliva sample for genetic analysis.

What Are the Symptoms and Who's at Risk?

Pancreatitis is potentially fatal. The symptoms are extreme abdominal pain, fever, and nausea. Acute pancreatitis usually must be treated in a hospital, and although the majority of patients recover, approximately 5% of acute attacks are fatal. Additional usual side effects of these medications are nausea, constipation, and diarrhoea.

Experts advise that although these shots can be revolutionary for individuals with severe obesity or type 2 diabetes, their benefits are not so obvious for those who take them solely to shed a few kilos in a hurry. The dangers may prove to exceed the benefits, particularly for individuals purchasing these medications with no medical monitoring.
